The Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow with a background in epidemiology, mathematics, computer science, engineering, statistics/data science. This position will be with the Barocas Lab, an innovative, interdisciplinary research program that is aimed at studying the intersection of infectious diseases, substance use disorders, and social determinants of health. This research program uses a combination of clinical epidemiology, simulation modeling, machine learning, and health economics to 1) improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations, 2) uncover structural factors that drive health inequities, and 3) inform health policy.

Housed within this lab are several highly innovative programs including 1) The Missing US Project, a project aimed at uncovering hidden populations and hidden risk factors for substance use and HIV and re-defining epidemiologic surveillance systems using a community-engaged approach, 2) The ReDUCE Project, a simulation model aimed to understand cost-effective strategies to reduce infectious complications associated with substance use, and 3) the HEALing Communities Study, a large-scale, multi-state intervention study to reduce opioid overdose deaths by 40%. We will work with the fellow to find the projects within the lab that are most tailored to their 1) skillset and 2) long-term career goals. To achieve our goal, we work with a broad range of stakeholders including government organizations, non-profit, and community-based organization.

A person in this position will work alongside the principal investigator and several team members in several states in the analytic aspects of the research. The Barocas Lab aims to develop help the Postdoctoral fellow develop skills not obtained during doctoral studies including making research relevant to clinicians, policymakers, and other decision-makers.  At the end of the Postdoctoral fellowship, the fellow should highly competitive for independent funding.

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Analyze epidemiologic and administrative data using advanced statistical methodologies including Bayesian synthesis, machine learning, and/or natural language processing
  • Use an established computer simulation model (written in C++) and build out additional modules and features of the model
  • Create natural language processing algorithms
  • Synthesize multiple forms of evidence to estimate parameters for simulation modeling
  • Interpret model results
  • Balance multiple competing priorities and tasks
  • Prepare and coordinate applications to IRBs
  • Write grants and manuscripts, and present at scientific conferences. 
  • Assist with project documentation and reporting
  • Maintain and update project and regulatory files, as necessary
  • Developing standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Collaborating with researchers at other institutions and with government officials
  • Attend multidisciplinary meetings and work groups

Salary Range

$53,760-   $65,292, in alignment with current NIH salary range dependent upon years of postdoctoral experience

 

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications  

A PhD degree in an analytic area such as epidemiology, mathematics, computer science, engineering, statistics/data science.

Records of first author manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A background in infectious diseases and/or substance use preferred.
  • Knowledge of advanced mathematics
  • Understanding of transmission dynamics
  • Database software expertise (proficient or advanced) including but not limited to R, STATA, SAS, C++, or python
