Job Summary
A research team from the Department of Family and Consumer Studies is seeking highly motivated candidates for one Post-Doctoral Fellowship.  The successful candidate would contribute to an NIH-funded study examining how neighborhood social, political, and economic environments interact with family health history to influence the intergenerational transmission of Type II Diabetes (T2DM).  In this project, we estimate the risk of T2DM as a function of both family history of diabetes and neighborhood environments.
We draw on comprehensive, longitudinal records in the Utah Population Database (UPDB), which contain individual-level data on medical, residential, and familial variables spanning decades for an entire population. The UPDB is an unparalleled research resource.  The infrastructure for these secure data links disparate records for a given person allows the UPDB to detail life histories, including neighborhoods associated with each event in an individual’s life. This approach creates the UPDB’s unique genealogical structure, permitting investigations of intergenerational and familial characteristics.
Responsibilities
• Contribute to the existing aims of the project and provide additional leadership on cost benefit analysis related to project aims.
• Participate in project meetings and other events with the team
• The Fellow is expected to take advantage of the many resources at University of Utah  (e.g., colloquia, workshops, and other events) for professional development.
• Candidates must be able to perform self-directed research as well as collaborate with team members
• Demonstrate effective communication skills: present research at local, national, and international meetings and co-author manuscripts for publications in scientific journals.
Minimum Qualifications
Ideal candidates would have doctoral-level training and interests in one or more of the following: economics, sociology, or demography, with expertise in estimating health care expenditures and/or undertaking cost-benefit analysis.  Additional preference is given to candidates with experience in Geographic Information System Mapping (GIS) techniques.  Position involves working closely with an interdisciplinary team of investigators in sociology, demography, psychology, human development, and economics on data analysis, preparation of manuscripts, and grant writing.
