Job Summary

The University of Utah (UU), DOE BES-funded Energy Frontier Research Center, MUSE, has two postdoctoral fellow openings starting immediately. Details on the Center mission, team, events and publications can be found at https://www.efrcmuse.utah.edu/.

The mission of the EFRC is to develop a new fundamental understanding and models of the transport and interfacial properties of fluids confined by porous media by integrating multi-scale experimental and theoretical methods including state-of-the-art microscopy imaging, and validated multi-scale, physics-based modeling of hierarchical and natural nanostructured materials of varying levels of physical and chemical heterogeneities.

Both postdoctoral fellowships will require excellent technical and communication skills as part of a fast-paced collaboration between five universities and a national laboratory. More specifically, the two positions will focus on 1) nano-porous geo-architected materials synthesis and 2) in situ experimental assessment of mechanical properties of nano-porous geological materials. The first position will be principally a collaboration between researchers at the University of California-Davis (UCD) and UU. The second position will be principally a collaboration between researchers at Cornell University (CU) and UU. While the two fellows will be employees of the University of Utah, opportunities exist for the candidates to be physically located at one of the other partner institutions. Both fellows will be expected to mentor students and carryout independent experimental and theoretical research in their respected areas. In addition, fellows will help lead collaborative communications between the partner institutions.

A stretch goal of the center in area 1 is to fabricate relatively large scale (testable) geo-materials with designed and well-characterized pore shape and distributions. While the Center is seeking individuals with broad skills in materials synthesis, demonstrable competency in areas such as self-assembly, sol gel chemistry, MOF, gas precursor, 3D printing, electrophoresis, and conventional sintering methods are of interest to the Center. The fellow responsible for area 2 will be expected to have excellent knowledge of the mechanical properties of inorganic. Skills of interest include competency in the use of in situ TEM, pico- or nano-indentation, surface chemical analysis, and synchrotron methods, x-ray methods for characterizing microstructure and chemistry under confinement.

Applicants should have a PhD in a field of materials science and engineering or a closely related field.
