Bacterial Physiology, Genetics, and Genomics - Emory University School of Medicine
Full-time position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Joanna Goldberg in the Department of Pediatrics at Emory University. This laboratory is located on Emory’s main campus on the same floor as the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in Rollins Research Center. This new position will help advance our group’s research efforts to understand Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus interact during infection and cause disease.
Our laboratory studies bacterial pathogenesis with a particular focus on infections in people living with the inherited disease cystic fibrosis (CF). The postdoctoral fellow will lead and coordinate efforts along with our collaborators at Emory University and Georgia Tech to develop and validate preclinical models of CF infection. Experiments involve bioinformatics, state of the art genomics, and single-cell microscopy.
The postdoctoral fellow will perform experiments, initially designed by the PI, but then independently with oversight by the PI. The position requires keeping careful detailed notebooks including experimental procedures and accurate presentation of results and analysis of data. The ability to review the literature for related research developments and techniques is strongly encouraged as well as a willingness to learn and implement new skills. Weekly meeting will be held with the PI.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s and PhD degree in Biology or Chemistry or related field required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with bioinformatics and bacterial genetics.
A minimum of a 2-year commitment is highly desired.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
