The English Department at Loyola University Maryland invites applications for a two-year teaching postdoctoral fellow with a specialization in African American literary studies, whose expertise may include other aspects of the Black diaspora. The individual selected for this position will be part of Loyola University Maryland’s Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship, which is designed to support early career scholars from underrepresented minority groups on their path to becoming faculty members. The fellowship will provide financial support for salaries and benefits of fellows for two years. This fellowship program is designed to provide emerging scholars with professional mentoring in teaching and research with guidance of established faculty. Fellows will participate in a yearlong professional development program that includes internal and external support. Fellows will teach two courses per semester and conduct research and/or creative work in their chosen field of study. In addition to teaching and research, fellows will have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate students and participate in the life of the department and university. Funds will be provided for research or travel. The fellow will attend faculty meetings, serve on a department committee, and participate in faculty/student social events.
This position is open to a broad range of historical periods and locations, as well as a diversity of approaches to the study of Black literature and culture. Candidates whose research and teaching interests focus on Anglophone works produced by people from Africa and the African diaspora, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Caribbean, will be considered.
Strong candidates will have (1) A Ph.D. in field (2) a record of promise as a scholar and future faculty member; (3) the ability to teach undergraduate courses in the areas listed above; (4) the ability to create a sense of inclusion and belonging in the classroom, and to infuse multicultural content into course material as appropriate; (5) strong commitment to excellence in teaching, including an appreciation of or engagement in high-impact teaching practices; (6) ability to contribute to the Jesuit educational mission of the department and university.
