What You Will Do

The successful candidate will work directly under mentorship of a staff member. The diverse and broad areas of current research interests include, but are not limited to:

  • Inorganic, organic, and actinide synthetic chemistry, catalysis, polymers, and nanomaterials

  • Analytical chemistry, measurement science, separations, spectroscopy, remote sensing, fieldable instrumentation, bio-analytical chemistry, science of signatures

  • Materials chemistry and characterization, additive manufacturing, aging, corrosion and materials compatibility

  • Data analysis, chemometric, advanced data visualization, modeling, and data mining

The Post Bachelor’s category of the UGS Program offers college graduates the opportunity to participate in the UGS program after graduation. This category applies to those students who have been awarded a bachelor’s degree, but have not yet been accepted and enrolled in a graduate program. Post Bachelor students may remain in this category for up to two years. Academic year and/or summer internships are available. The intent of this program is for the student to prepare for graduate school acceptance by taking the necessary entrance exams and applying to graduate programs while gaining some research/work experience. What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

  • Fluent in common software packages including Excel, Work, PowerPoint

  • Laboratory experience demonstrating an attention to detail and commitment to safe work practices

  • Demonstrated knowledge with the safe and proper handling of hazardous chemicals

  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills

  • When applying, candidate must attach a resume, cover letter, and their most recent transcripts (or an acceptance letter if transcripts have not been issued).

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or chemical engineering awarded in the past three years, but have not yet been accepted and enrolled in a graduate program.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with common laboratory apparatus and instrumentation

  • Experimental techniques currently used within your selected chemistry science subfield(s); e.g. Schlenk lines, inert atmosphere gloveboxes, vacuum and pressure systems, advanced analytical instrumentation, lasers, chemometric and advanced data analysis, etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context; and

  • Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Where You Will Work Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

Chemistry Division serves the Laboratory's core national security mission areas of weapons science and threat reduction with innovative chemical science and technology. Our capabilities are also essential for the emerging mission areas of energy security, health and medical diagnostics, the environment, civilian-sector R&D, and industrial partnering. Chemistry Division is a highly interactive, well-funded basic and applied research organization with an annual budget of approximately $138 million and a staff of approximately 400, organized into 5 groups. It operates within a complex safety and security envelope across multiple sites in the Laboratory, including radiological and limited areas.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2-Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
