The University of Arizona Libraries seek a Platform Engineer (Systems Administrator 1) to join the Platform Engineering team. You’ll help design, develop, implement, and maintain infrastructure supporting key library services. You'd gain experience with technologies we currently use, including Ubuntu Linux, VxRail HCI virtualization platform, Veeam, Ansible for configuration management, and AWS and Wasabi cloud infrastructure. You'll help us maintain our current infrastructure and help us strengthen and expand our security and cloud infrastructure. This position reports to the head of the Platform Engineering team. Platforms members also work collaboratively with the Software and Web Development Team within the Technology Strategy and Services department. For some projects, we also work together with Windows system administrators in our department and with the University’s central IT group (UITS). Familiarity with one or more of the following is preferred:

Virtualization solutions (we use VMware)
Cloud infrastructure technologies (we use AWS & Wasabi)
Storage systems (we use Qumulo)
Backup solutions (we use Veeam and AWS Storage Gateway)
Ubuntu servers and LAMP stack components
Project management tools (we use Redmine)
Scripting using Bash
Version control software (we use Git & GitHub)
Configuration management tools (we use Ansible)
Containerization software (we use Docker)
Administration of network switches and firewall

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintain UA Libraries systems infrastructure, including patching server operating systems, inventorying system components, and maintaining system backup and database archiving operations
  • Monitor availability, capacity, continuity, and security of server environments
  • Respond to incidents, analyze problems to determine root causes and prevent recurrence, and handle routine service requests
  • Explore security best practices, address security vulnerabilities, and perform routine hardware and software audits to ensure compliance (including PCI)
  • Explore cloud technologies and participate in discussions about sustainable use of cloud infrastructure for UA Libraries systems
  • Participate in disaster recovery planning
  • Promote and document systems infrastructure best practices

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced learning acquired through experience.
