Description

We have an open position to study species distribution modeling in salamanders. The student will focus on integrating physiological data into species distribution models to predict climate vulnerability and niche evolution in plethodontid salamanders. Students will learn a variety of statistical and computer programming techniques. Students will also be encouraged to develop their own independent projects on salamanders physiology. Students may be required to teach as a teaching assistant. We also encourage anyone to apply that is not interested in salamander physiology or species distribution modeling. Ongoing projects also involve birds and bumble bees. Students may be interested in experiments or modeling. Anyone with a computer science and/or animal research background is encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Required qualifications for the position include at least a bachelor's degree in science and research experience. Preferred qualifications include research experience on animals (vertebrate or invertebrate), a quantitative or statistical background, experience with programming in Python, and experience in working in lab and/or field research. The position will begin Fall 2022 and has three years of funding. Additional years will be covered by teaching assistantships or additional funding. Lab overview Our lab is located at Iowa State University in the department of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology. As a member of the lab, you will have opportunities to gain experience in environmental physiology, functional genomics, and individual-based modeling. Research in the lab generally focuses on amphibians, birds, and small mammals, but we are question-based scientists and open to any system that helps us answer fundamental questions in ecology and evolution using physiological approaches.
