Description
The repatriation of wolves to Isle Royale represents a unique opportunity to quantify the effects of wolf repatriation not only for their main prey (moose), but also for other mammals that inhabit the island. We are currently studying the response of martens and foxes to wolf repatriation and are now recruiting a new PhD graduate student to join our team to study the drivers behind the population dynamics of snowshoe hares. The selected candidate will analyze historical and ongoing survey data of snowshoe hare density to explore the cyclicity of this island population, use occurrence data to explore habitat quality and connectivity (including moose browse data to explore competition), unite hare surveys with our ongoing carnivore survey data to explore potential co-dynamics with snowshoe hares in the face of wolf presence and absence and analyze known-fate survival and cause-specific mortality to build demographic models and inform a vulnerability assessment for snowshoe hare populations on the island. The student will be advised by Dr. Jonathan Pauli (https://pauli.russell.wisc.edu/) and work closely with biologist and natural resources program manager Mark Romanski at Isle Royale National Park. This position will start in January 2022. The research assistantship includes an annual stipend, tuition remission and health care benefits. UW-Madison has a long history of excellence in ecology, conservation biology and wildlife management. The university ranks consistently among the top research universities in the United States.
