Description
The Evolutionary Toxicology Lab at George Mason University is looking for a PhD or MS student starting in Fall 2021 to develop new approaches for rapid toxicity screening. The student will focus on establishing nematodes as a model system to test the effects of hundreds of compounds on soil and aquatic ecosystems, with a focus on plant protection products. The overall goal is to quickly and accurately predict the impacts of chemicals on ecological and human health. This position offers the opportunity to gain wide-ranging skills, including wet lab toxicity testing, computational toxicology, molecular biology, analytical chemistry, and science policy. The selected PhD or MS student will obtain their degree in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at George Mason University. The Evolutionary Toxicology Lab (www.scottglaberman.com) is a multidisciplinary lab that combines ecology, evolution, physiology, molecular biology, and toxicology to understand and mitigate the effects of anthropogenic stressors on animals. We strive to conduct rigorous scientific research but also engage in both policy and outreach based on our findings. Our lab is based at the beautiful new Potomac Environmental Research and Education Center (https://cos.gmu.edu/perec) in Woodbridge, Virginia.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a strong interest in environmental toxicology or ecotoxicology. Candidates with a background in any of the following areas are highly encouraged to apply: laboratory toxicity testing; computer programming and bioinformatics; analytical chemistry; molecular biology and genomics; environmental engineering; water quality science; nematode genetics and development. Prior scientific publications or a demonstrated ability in science writing will be a major criterion for selection. The chosen student will be funded through a graduate research assistantship for the first year and a combination of research and teaching assistantships in subsequent years. If you are interested in this opportunity, please look at our lab webpage and publications, and send an email to Dr. Scott Glaberman ([email protected]) with the following information: (1) CV/Resume, including contact information for three references who can speak to your scientific/research experience; (2) description of general research interests, previous experience, and why you are specifically interested in the work being done in the lab; (3) whether you intend to apply for a MS or PhD program; (4) post-graduate career plans; (5) whether you have applied for any external fellowships (e.g., NSF or EPA). Since the Fall 2021 application deadline for the MS/PhD program is July 31st, review of applications will start immediately until the deadline. PhD candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and MS candidates must currently reside in Virginia.
