Likely Thesis Title: Developing Wildlife Habitat in Central Wisconsin Using an Irregular Shelterwood and Fire Likely two chapters of thesis • Chapter 1: Structural Characteristics of Public Land Wildlife Habitat Demonstration Units • Chapter 2: Irregular Shelterwood and Fire as Tools for Regenerating Oak Stands for Wildlife Habitat: Re-inventory after 15 Years Nature of the position: This student would be brought on as a research assistant beginning during spring semester 2022 of the 2021-2022 academic year and the summer of 2022 using the Creation of the Deer Habitat Management Research Units (DHMRU) Project: Demonstrating and Assessing the Integration of Managed Forest Law and Deer Habitat Management. This student would conduct detailed post-harvest mapping of the sites that are already harvested (CWES Habitat Demo, Eau Claire and Clark County). This will include browse assessment and overstory conditions. Data collected will be used for Chapter 1 of their thesis. They will also likely be involved with the Karner Blue butterfly monitoring over summer. During the 2022-2023 academic year, the graduate student would be paid off of the project: Irregular Shelterwood and Fire as Tools for Regenerating Oak Stands for Wildlife Habitat: Re-inventory after 15 Years. They will spend the end of summer 2022 collecting pre-burn data from the sites. During fall 2022, they will assist in site preparation and monitoring for the burns. During spring 2023, they will assess the burn response. This assistantships is paid at $13,250 per year. Plus, if the student is an out-of-state residents and taking at least 4 credits while on grad assistantship, their out of state tuition will be waived, and they will pay only WI resident tuition (except MN residents who pay what WI-MN reciprocity agreement requires). Students on grad assistantships may be eligible for some insurance. Summer pay will be on a collection of research and demonstration projects and paid hourly. Skills the student would gain from this project and the grad experience: • BMP for Water Quality and Forest Health certification (Fall 2022 or 2023 semester) • Timber Marking certification (through courses during the semester) • Pesticide certification Category 2.0 and 6.0 with knowledge base of chemical application for restoration projects (Fall 2022 or 2023 semester) • Chainsaw certification (Spring 2022 semester) • Field inventory techniques for forestry • Training in habitat management for woodcock, ruffed grouse, deer, various neotropical migrant birds, pollinators and KBB • Timber marking for wildlife habitat and restoration projects Target Student The ideal student would be a wildlife or ecological restoration major with interest in both habitat management and restoration. The ideal student would have a desire for a career in either consulting (specializing in conducting timber sales with habitat or restoration goals where they qualify as a forester but have habitat preparation) or within a public agency with a strong habitat focus. Qualifications
