What You Will Do
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to join Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Safeguards Science & Technology group to contribute to a variety of nuclear policy focused projects. NEN-1 works to safeguard nuclear materials by developing techniques and systems for nondestructive assay of nuclear and hazardous material. We also have an extensive training program to teach methods of nondestructive assay measurement and analysis and provide as many as 30 courses annually. NEN-1 has a rich history of influencing safeguards policy by combining technical expertise with policy acumen.
Specific projects include: 1) investigation into the impact of peaceful uses collaboration as outlined in Article IV of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), 2) research related to acquisition path analysis, 3) general investigation of the safeguards needs related to microreactors, and 4) support of Office of International Security projects. Candidates would be expected to contribute to one or more of these projects through literature reviews, research, written technical reports, and technical presentations.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience showing initiative and follow-through in nuclear policy related work.
Demonstrated experience working both independently and as part of team.
Demonstrated experience documenting and reporting on nuclear policy research subjects, for example through written plans, proposals, reports, papers, articles, or theses.
Demonstrated experience showing excellent communication skills, written and oral, formal and informal.
Cover Letter - In addition to the resume or CV, you must include a cover letter addressing each of the minimum job requirements and desired skills.
Demonstrated experience and/or familiarity with guiding nuclear policy documents especially the NPT
Demonstrated experience with nuclear safeguards research
Participated in short courses, university classes, or workshops related to radiation measurements
Awareness of nuclear technology and the civilian nuclear fuel cycle
To receive full consideration, candidates must have been awarded a master’s degree in political science with a nuclear focus or in a related field including but not limited to economics, international relations, or engineering.
All viable candidates must have a minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0 for consideration. A resume, bachelors’ transcript, and masters’ transcript are required.

Where You Will Work
Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
NEN-1 works to safeguard nuclear materials by developing techniques and systems for nondestructive assay of nuclear and hazardous material, conducting more than 30 training courses for international and domestic audiences, developing unattended and remote monitoring systems, influencing safeguards policy, and conducting computational physics and simulations. A combination of technical and policy professionals collaborate in NEN-1 to achieve these missions. Applications include nuclear materials control and accountability for domestic DOE nuclear facilities, nuclear waste disposal, material stabilization efforts, and international nonproliferation efforts.
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance, but candidates may be submitted for a clearance pending project sensitivity and candidate eligibility. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
