Multiple M.S. Graduate Position in Biology at Austin Peay State University The Department of Biology at Austin Peay State University (APSU) invites applications for admission to our M.S. program for Fall 2022. We offer both thesis-track and non-thesis track degrees. The program comprises approximately 35 graduate students supported by research and teaching assistantships. APSU (10,000 students) is located in Clarksville, TN, 45 minutes northwest of Nashville and is in close proximity to remnant prairies, numerous parks and public lands, and diverse aquatic ecosystems. Because support of a faculty advisor is necessary for admission to the thesis-track plan of study, interested students should communicate with potential faculty research mentors as part of the application process. Support of a faculty research mentor is not required for admission to the non-thesis degree track. The following faculty are recruiting students for the upcoming Fall 2021-22 academic year: Mollie F. Cashner ([email protected]) There will be two Master's student positions open in the Cashner Lab starting in the Fall 2022 semester. One position will focus on investigating embryo and larval development of a federally threatened fish species. Applicants for this position should have experience keeping fish, and those with experience keeping native North American minnows will be preferred. In addition, applicants proficient in chemistry will be preferred. The second position will focus on North American minnow conservation, reproductive biology, and/or population genetics. Both positions will be eligible for GTA support and additional external funding support. Prospective students are encouraged to contact Dr. Cashner by 17th February via email ([email protected]). Haase ([email protected]) There will be a Master’s position available in the Haase Lab starting Fall 2022. The student will work on a project studying hibernation ecology of tri-colored bats in Texas culverts. Although the specific thesis research topic is open, the successful application will be expected to engage in field-based research related to thermoregulatory strategies, roosting behaviors, and susceptibility to white-nose syndrome of tri-colored bats. The project will require a field season during the winter in east Texas coordinated with Texas Parks and Wildlife. Travel costs, including housing, will be provided while in the field. The assistantship will be split between a teaching (semester) and research (summer) assistantship, and includes payment of tuition and a 12-month stipend. Minimum qualifications include: (1) a B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Wildlife Conservation, or a related field, (2) experience handling bats, (3) excellent written and oral communication skills, (4) strong self-motivation and ability to work well independently and with a team, and (5) ability to work long hours under challenging and physically demanding field conditions. Preferred qualifications include experience working with wildlife telemetry and data analysis using R. Candidates with preferred qualifications should be able to demonstrate the acquisition and application of their experiences outside of a traditional classroom setting. Harry Potter fan-fiction and game theory applications to Quidditch. Rebecca Blanton Johansen ([email protected]) Research focal areas include evolution, phylogeography, and conservation of freshwater fishes and crayfishes. There will be an M.S. position in Dr. Johansen’s lab in Fall 2022. Students may pursue research including how environment influences trait variation in fishes, population and conservation genetics of imperiled aquatic taxa, or parentage assessment for fishes providing parental care, among others. Minimum qualifications include: (1) a B.S. in Biology or a related field, (2) experience working with aquatic organisms and in aquatic environments, (3) excellent written and oral communication skills, (4) strong self-motivation and ability to work well independently and with a team. Preferred qualifications include experience in data collection, management and analysis using statistics, particularly molecular data or geometric morphometric shape data. Candidates with preferred qualifications should be able to demonstrate the acquisition and application of their experiences outside of a traditional classroom setting. Alex Zhang ([email protected]) Dr. Zhang’s research interests include bacterial infectious diseases, vaccine development, epidemiology, and bacterial genomics. Manisha Gupte ([email protected]) Obesity has reached epidemic proportions worldwide and is associated with an increased risk of numerous metabolic abnormalities including Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, and Heart Failure. My primary research interest is to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying these pathologies in an obesogenic environment.
