The School of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Medical Student Counselor (Counseling Services Coordinator).

The Medical Student Counselor provides confidential, free of charge, academic and personal counseling to medical students and their partner/spouse as appropriate. The Counselor reports directly to the Director, Medical Student Counseling and Wellness Services, who provides administrative and clinical oversight for the Counseling Service.  This full-time position serves as one of three medical student counselors supporting the School’s 900+ medical students, 200 Rehabilitation Medicine students and 200+ Medex Northwest physician assistant students. The Counselor is also available for consultation regarding student concerns to thousands of faculty distributed across the five state WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho) region including six Foundation phase campuses and over 200 clinical training sites.

This position will work closely with the Director of Counseling and Wellness Services and through her, with the Assistant and Associate Deans for Student Affairs, and have occasional contact with the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Chief Diversity Officer, Associate Dean for Curriculum, the College Heads and mentor faculty, School of Medicine faculty and staff, and the medical students. This position requires a high degree of independent decision-making and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to prioritize many competing tasks from students, faculty and the School’s administration. With the regional orientation of the medical school, the Medical Student Counselor must be service-oriented and customer-focused, able to address questions, problems, or concerns from faculty, staff and students across the organization, in a professional, prompt and confidential manner. The position will require the ability to multitask, prioritize job responsibilities, and work effectively with faculty, students and staff, including individuals who possess a wide range of perspectives, values, beliefs or political affiliations while maintaining a non-judgmental and unbiased professional posture. The Medical Student Counselor will furthermore participate in program development and continuous quality improvement.   

RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct Student Counseling Services:
• Provides brief, solution-focused individual, couples and/or group counseling to medical students and their spouses/partners via in-person or distance counseling and maintains appropriate documentation of the services.
• Provides brief, solution-focused individual counseling for MEDEX and Rehabilitation Medicine Students completing coursework or internships in the Seattle area.
• Provides crisis intervention services, as needed, to medical students, Rehabilitation Medicine and MEDEX students during regular business hours.
o Assists students in addressing personal, mental health, academic and professional concerns.
o In consultation with the Director of the Counseling and Wellness Service, engages in clinical consultation with a consulting psychiatrist as needed.
o In consultation with the Director of the Counseling and Wellness Service, consults with the Washington Physicians Health Program as needed and coordinates related student support as appropriate.
• Guides students in the preparation for presentation at Student Progress Committee meetings.
o Develops and provides workshops in support of programs managed by the Center for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the School of Medicine.
o Adheres to appropriate professional standards (ethics, access, documentation, confidentiality, etc.)
o Maintains quarterly statistics of Counseling and Wellness Services activities.
• In consultation with the Director of Counseling and Wellness Services, makes appropriate referrals for medication assessment and management, for specialized and/or long-term treatment.
• Participates in weekly supervision meetings with the Director of Medical Student Counseling and Wellness, and in weekly Counseling Service Team meetings.

School of Medicine Student Wellness Programs:
• Initiates and participates in the planning and implementation of wellness services (workshops, seminars, groups and events) designed to support the health and wellness of medical students and their partners.
• Writes articles for dissemination to students on topics related to mental health and well-being.
• Assists in maintaining a library of self-help and mental health resource material for medical students and the medical student counselors.
• Assists in the planning and implementation of yearly events that focus on recognizing mental health issues in medical students (depression, anxiety, anorexia, bulimia, substance abuse, etc.).
• Attends Wellness Council meetings once per quarter and offers consultation and support to students in the planning and implementation of student-led wellness activities as needed.
• Travel, as needed, to campuses in the WWAMI region to participate in health and wellness activities and seminars at WWAMI sites.

Consultation and Coordination of Services:
• Consults with faculty, staff, or administration as needed regarding issues of medical student mental health, wellness, progress, and/or behavior, while maintaining student confidentiality.
• Consults with Academic Skills Counselor regarding student learning and academic performance issues as needed.
• Coordinates referrals for medical student mental health and wellness services with other campus health providers such as Hall Health, Student Counseling Service at Schmitz Hall, Disabled Student Resources, and the Psychological Services and Training Clinic on a case by case basis.
• Participates in the Health Sciences Counselor Consortium to generate and learn from best practices.
• Participates in monthly group case consultation, with the Graduate Medical Education Resident and Fellow Wellness counselors, provided by the designated faculty psychiatrist from the Department of Psychiatry.

Other Administrative Duties:
• Participates in School of Medicine, Academic Affairs, and faculty committees as requested.
• Participates in other activities within the Student Affairs Office, including but not limited to:
o Medical School Orientation and Immersion programs in Seattle
o Student Affairs staff meetings
o Planning and participation in class meetings, staff retreats, and faculty and staff development as requested

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Master’s degree in a mental health field (Social Work, Counseling, or Clinical Psychology) plus a minimum of three years counseling experience with adult populations, including work in a higher education and/or healthcare setting.
Must have current Washington state license as a mental health provider and the ability to obtain licensure in the WWAMI regional states.
• Must be experienced in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric disorders, to include suicide risk assessment. Familiarity with assessment and treatment of common problems seen in the Counseling Service including major depression, anxiety and adult attention deficit disorder.
• Ability to provide individual, couples and group counseling.
• Ability to interpret and communicate to others complex policies and procedures.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated experience in large, highly structured environments.
• Ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy and productivity.
• Ability to handle confidential information responsibly.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain harmonious working relationships and effectively address complex and sensitive administrative issues.
• Proven track record in exercising discretion and independent judgment effectively in decision-making processes.
• Ability to work across multiple levels of an organization to achieve results.
• Effective at dealing with sensitive issues and maintaining collegial relationships.

DESIRED REQUIREMENTS
• Experience providing counseling in a higher education or health care setting is strongly desired.
• Experience working with racial and ethnic minority populations, LGBTQ and other under-represented populations.
• Familiarity and practical experience working with models of time-limited and evidenced-based psychotherapy, in addition to group theory and process.
• Computer proficiency with word processing and databases in a Windows and/or Mac environment.
• Familiarity with utilizing Zoom video conferencing technology.
• Experience with crisis counseling working in an emergency department or acute care clinic.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The position requires the employee to work beyond a normal work week (e.g. more than 40 hours a week), two evenings per week and occasional weekend time, to participate in Student Affairs and Academic Affairs activities, student wellness activities, meet project deadlines and attend meetings. Some travel may be required to regional WWAMI sites.
