Mass Spectrometry Post-Master's Student

What You Will Do

The Bioscience Division is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic post-master’s candidate interested in performing research within the facets of mass spectrometry – especially proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics. The successful candidate will work with a team of scientists, technicians and students on number of different projects ranging from exposure science and biosample analysis, including method development, data acquisition, and data processing. The student will be expected to contribute to different projects as need arises. The ideal student must be meticulous in their work, self-starting, independent, and able to communicate in a professional manner. The term of the appointment is 2 years. Depending on the performance of the student and funding availability, there are opportunities to extend the appointment by transitioning to other types of LANL positions or continuing education.

The student will also act as a member of the Bioenergy and Biome Sciences Group by attending group, and as a member of the mass spectrometry team. Responsibilities include conducting research and reporting results back to the team at weekly meetings. Furthermore, on the job training and opportunities will arise to craft peer-review publications and grant proposals. In addition, the student is encouraged to attend seminars and other LANL functions to expand her knowledge base and broaden interests. The student will also have the opportunity to participate in networking and social events.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• General background in biology, chemistry, or analytical sciences

• Demonstrated experience with mass spectrometry and methods of sample preparation, quantitative/qualitative results.

• Familiarity with good laboratory practices and experiment design

• Demonstrated competency with computers and software applications for word processing, data processing, and data visualization

• Ability to maintain and record work performed, data obtained, as well as write and follow detailed protocols

• Ability to understand and present research results clearly and succinctly in both written and oral formats

• Ability to comfortably work independently and as part of a team

• Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week on a consistent schedule

• Ability to manage time and see tasks to completion

Education/Experience: A master’s degree in biology, chemistry, analytical science, or related technical field obtained within the past 3 years, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, and have not yet been accepted into another master’s program or Ph.D. program.

Desired Qualifications:

• Demonstrated expertise in analytical science

• Broad fundamental knowledge of mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography

• Expertise in analysis of biomolecules, including proteins, lipids, and metabolites

• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Desire to report work in peer-reviewed publications and assist in the grant proposal process.

• Experience with the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various mass spectrometers including Thermo Fisher Orbitrap platforms.

• Experience with synthetic chemistry, especially synthetic routes, preferably with endpoint analytical analysis for physical characteristics.

• Knowledge of any coding languages (e.g. R or Python), other statistical data processing packages, or mass spectrometry data packages.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

Where You Will Work

Bioscience Division (B) comprises a diverse group of experimentalists and computer scientists who work closely with other interdisciplinary scientists across the Laboratory. Their work serves the Nation by developing science and technology to reduce natural and deliberate threats to human populations, their way of life, and the global environment. The mission of the Bioenergy and Biome Sciences (B‐11) group includes enhancing biomass growth, oil production and photosynthetic efficiency in biofuel feedstocks. Members of the group work on microbiome characterization, elucidation of biochemical pathways, structural biology, enzyme function discovery and organic synthesis.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
