Salary: $43,404-$57,503

Immediate opening for a full-time hybrid legal advocate with the Human Trafficking Prevention Project (HTPP), which is a pro bono partnership between the University of Baltimore School of Law and Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS). The HTPP provides free legal services to survivors of human trafficking and those made most vulnerable to exploitation in an attempt to address the collateral consequences of their involvement with the criminal legal system and prevent future exploitation. This position is hybrid, grant funded for one year with significant likelihood of refunding and is housed at the University of Baltimore School of Law.

The HTPP is seeking a highly motivated candidate with legal and project management skills to focus on intake, case management, and case placement for clients applying for legal services through the HTPP.  The project also includes significant community outreach, education and training components.  

** This position requires frequent travel throughout Maryland. Valid driver's license required.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Review and respond to service requests and referrals from HTPP website; Conduct intake for potential HTPP clients, which may include phone intake and/or onsite intake at community partner organizations.

2. Provide guidance and support to clients needing fingerprints, court records, and other documents; manage documents and paperwork associated with cases.

3. Help with scheduling and set up of trainings; prepare flyers and factsheets, and assist with drafting social media and newsletter content.

4. Participate in outreach activities; attend local and state-level task force meetings and other HTPP related events; engage in training opportunities related to human trafficking, trauma-informed services, and client empowerment models, among other related topics.

Education: High School Diploma or GED is required. At least 2 years of college or paralegal certificate from accredited institution is preferred.

Required Experience:
•    At least 1 year of related administrative, customer service, or legal experience.
•    Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience. Related experience may include directly related volunteer work performed on a regular basis.

Preferred Experience:
•    Demonstrated commitment to communities, such as: domestic workers, economically disadvantaged people, immigrants and refugees, incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, LGBTQIA+ people, people of color, people with disabilities, people with HIV/AIDS, sex workers, victims of crime and abuse, and/or women and girls.
•    Prior community outreach and/or harm reduction experience.
•    Experience navigating public systems, such as the education, child welfare, juvenile criminal legal system, and/or the adult criminal legal system.
•    Fluency, written and oral, in Spanish.
•    Experience with record-keeping for state and/or federal grants.
•    Familiarity with legal case management software.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•    Experience providing trauma-informed services and/or case management.
•    Excellent computer, data entry, and organization skills.
•    Must be detail-oriented.
•    Must possess ability to deal with challenging calls from individuals in crisis situations.
•    Works well with others; a team player.
•    Strong written and oral communication skills essential.
•    Spanish language skills a plus.
•    Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
