Japanese Studies Fellowship Program for Doctoral Candidates

The Japan Foundation offers about 15 doctoral fellowships for up to 1 year for outstanding scholars to conduct research in Japan. The Doctoral Candidates Fellowship lasts for 4-12 months.


Eligibility & Requirements

Applicants must have achieved ABD (All But Dissertation) status by the time the fellowship begins. Should be in the humanities or social sciences. Higher priority will be given to those who are expected to submit their dissertation thesis shortly after the completion of the fellowship. Preference will normally be given to doctoral candidates under 35 years of age. Sufficient proficiency in Japanese to pursue research. Students with letters of affiliation are given priority. Projects must be related in substantial part to Japan. Proficiency in either Japanese or English.
