Japanese Government MEXT Research Student Scholarship

The Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) awards fellowships for American graduate students to research or study at universities in Japan for up to 2 years. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) will interview and test successful applicants in Japanese and English. Awardees will carry out a clear and thoughtful research program related to their field of study. Scholarship recipients may choose to get take doctoral courses, master’s courses or a professional graduate course.


Eligibility & Requirements

BA degree. Applicants must be a graduate from a Japanese university or have academic ability equal or superior to that of a Japanese university graduate. Must be willing to study Japanese language and receive instruction in it. An essential prerequisite is that applicants be in good physical and mental health. Must contact a Japanese professor and obtain a letter of acceptance from a Japanese university. Under 35 years of age. Applicants should apply for the field of study they majored in at university or its related field. Research program plan. Photo. Transcript. Graduation certificate or degree certificate of the last university attended (or an attested document certifying that the applicant will graduate from the school, where applicable). Recommendation from principal or the advisor of the last university attended. Recommendation from the present employer (if currently employed). Medical certificate on the prescribed form issued by the medical institution. Thesis abstract.
