Strategic Enrollment and Student Success has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success position.

Assistant Vice Chancellors typically report to an associate vice chancellor or vice chancellor and leading a specific functional area within a campus division, such as information technology, budget and finance, human resources, enrollment management, faculty affairs or student programs. 

Nature of Work:
The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success is responsible for collaborating across academic and administrative unit to best assure that CU Denver students persist through their college experience to completion and attainment of their degree, program, or educational goals.  This position will catalyze student success through insights into national trends in student success work and innovation in practices and policies.  The incumbent will serve as a university leader who implements and supports strategic, data-informed student success initiatives and evaluates the efficacy of these efforts. 

The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success also cultivates collaborations between schools/colleges, academic support units, and external partners to expand and deepen student success work across campus.   With a focus on academic success, this position will lead in using actionable data and evidence-based practices to enhance the opportunities for our students to thrive. This position develops and maintains a research and evaluation agenda that promotes a culture of accountability while contributing to the national discourse and best practices in higher education.  The AVC for Student Success oversees the work of Early Intervention, Student Success Applications, Student Success Initiatives, Student Success Evaluation, Transfer Initiatives, and University Advising.

This position directly reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Achievement and Student Success and provides support for institutional initiatives under the oversight of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Strategic Enrollment and Student Success. 

Examples of Worked Performed: 

  • Serves as an expert in student success best practices and research on emerging practices.
  • Provides leadership, guidance, planning, and implementation of initiatives that foster inclusive excellence and equitable outcomes for all students, with an emphasis on improving retention, persistence, graduation, and time-to-degree.
  • Identifies and tracks successful completion of student success initiatives aligned with strategic enrollment and student success goals and KPIs.
  • Works in close collaboration with Strategic Enrollment and Student Success senior leadership team to develop strategic initiatives and assessment activities for the division, and tracks progress toward execution.
  • Establishes and monitors goals, objectives, and key performance indicators to determine effectiveness of outreach, opportunities for intervention, and potential improvements to practices. 
  • Uses national best practices and emerging research to identify, develop, and guide innovative initiatives to improve student retention, persistence, and timely graduation. 
  • Develops and maintains strategic external partnerships involved in shared student success efforts (e.g., APLU, USU, NASH, CDHE). 
  • Manages the acquisition, implementation, and evaluation of key student success grant projects (e.g., JPMC, APLU).
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of CU Denver retention patterns, graduation rates, and other success indicators and share this information with key university stakeholders.
  • Assures that students have a high quality, consistent, and effective advising experience by overseeing and empowering the office of University Advising to coordinate shared practices across advising units and create common advisor trainings.
  • Extends the use of proactive outreach campaigns to include targeted groups of students who may be experiencing specific challenges. 
  • Advocates for emerging practices in the awarding of transfer and prior-learning credit to facilitate student transfer and success at CU Denver. 
  • Advocates for and monitor EAB Navigate efforts by way of training for faculty and advisors, and key personnel to efficiently use EAB as a retention tool to implement student success strategies, initiatives, outreach, and best practices.
  • Collaborates with partners within the Division of Strategic Enrollment & Student Success and across the University as appropriate to leverage a coordinated student success network to intervene with and assist students needing early intervention and support, especially Early Action. 
  • Partners with Division of Strategic Enrollment & Student Success senior leaders to identify, recommend and implement policy changes that best enable student success.
  • Partners with and develop strong working relationships with institutional leadership, special committees, and consultants to support execution of strategic goals.
  • Oversees research, analysis and synthesis of information as well as the development of reports, correspondence, and presentations on a wide range of topics and complex issues of central importance that impact the ability to meet the divisional mission and student success goals.
  • Acts on the authority of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Strategic Enrollment & Student Success and the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Achievement to coordinate and manage strategic projects with a focus on significant change management initiatives.
  • Manage the budget of the unit with oversight of each of the areas within the unit to include: Student Success, Transfer Initiatives, and University Advising.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary and Benefits:
The hiring range for this position has been established at $110,000 to $130,000.   

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree education, psychology, business, public administration, health care, educational technology, social science, liberal arts, communications, accounting, finance, library science, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • Six (6) years of progressive experience managing and/or developing strategy in a higher education setting. 
  • Three (3) years of experience leading student success initiatives for undergraduate students.
  • Experience working with EAB’s Navigate.
  • Budgeting and fiscal management experience.

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • A terminal degree specialization in educational leadership or higher education or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Student Affairs or Academic Affairs experience at an institution with a comprehensive urban campus.
  • Program and project management experience.
  • Previous experience with CU Denver systems, such as Concur, HRMS, Journal entries, etc.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and maintain positive interpersonal relationships within an ethnically and culturally diverse campus environment 
  • Understanding of academic principles associated with student success

  • Attention to detail and ability to think creatively 
  • Strong communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and appropriately both orally and in writing to internal and external constituents. 
  • Strong computer skills, especially Microsoft Office products 
  • Ability to work independently and/or with minimal supervision
