Scope of Responsibilities

The Interim Assistant Director for Student Engagement provides opportunities for undergraduate students and organizations to explore their leadership identities as it relates to the world around them, as well as organization advising and general program management assistance. They will be responsible for facilitating the education of students, program development, event management, and advising student groups on organization processes and policy implementation. This individual will work closely with programming focused on women’s identity development. The assistant director will engage collaboratively and partner with key stakeholders within the Duke University and Durham communities to support the ever-changing and diverse student population.

Duties

Administer assigned program areas including, but not limited to, planning, coordinating and implementing operations and activities such as classes, workshops, advertising, special events, staffing, financial and general business matters. This would include supporting leadership education programming designed primarily for women-identifying students. (35%)

Advise student leaders on organizational, business, leadership, legal liabilities, financial administration and other issues including interpretation of University policies and procedures. This includes supporting fraternity/sorority leaders, Penny Pilgram George Women’s leadership Initiative student leaders, and others. (35%)

Plan and implement publicity/marketing activities to promote programs and events; establish and maintain contact with other departments, area businesses and industries to promote the program. This also includes supporting the Office of Student Leadership’s assessment efforts, including managing and organizing data, design and distribute assessment measures to address intended program outcomes, and create assessment reports that translate collected data into narratives to share with stakeholders. (15%)

Interpret departmental policies and procedures, making decisions on specific operating problems and issuing instructions in the name of the program in accordance with precedents and established policies; Develop, monitor and analyze budgets including, but not limited to, projecting expenditures and revenue. Prepare financial and operational reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. (10%)

Perform other duties as assigned, including executing administrative projects, team assignments, and committee work. (5%)

Preferences

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred in Higher Education, Student Affairs or related field of study.
  • Experience: Work generally preferred is a minimum of one year of experience in student advising, leadership development, fraternity/sorority life, and program planning at the undergraduate and/or graduate level(s).
  • Knowledge: Must be familiar with student advising and event management work, interest & knowledge in women’s identity development and its relation to the college student experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work generally requires two years experience in personnel, college or university administration, or a related field to acquire skills necessary to provide program management, advising and general administrative support.  OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
