What You Will Do

The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J-DO) Division is seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated student who is interested in working in Information Technology for the DARHT Physics, Pulsed Power, and Diagnostics (J-5) Group. J-5 is responsible for accelerator and beam physics, pulsed-power engineering, accelerator diagnostics, data acquisition, controls systems and timing systems. The successful individual will be working in information technology for the controls team maintaining window servers, NetAPP filers, Cisco switches and Windows workstations.

Minimum Job Requirements:


  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment and collaborating with all levels of personnel.

  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written) and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to prioritize and work on multiple tasks at once.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Operating Systems.

  • Basic software and hardware troubleshooting skills.

  • Inquisitive, self-starter with a desire to research and learn new technologies.

Desired Skills:


  • Practical knowledge of TCP/IP networks.

  • Experience in administrating Windows systems.

  • College courses/vendor certification in Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Hyper-V and Cisco Networking.

  • Fluency in Microsoft PowerShell or other scripting.

  • Familiarity with using Windows SQL Server.

Education Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or relevant IT focused discipline. Must be enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent). Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).

Additional Details

No Clearance:  Position does not require a security clearance.  Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

Where You Will Work

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security.  LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division conducts experiments to generate high-quality data necessary to maintain a safe and reliable nuclear stockpile and to support global security. The Division fields, diagnoses, and conducts subcritical experiments, hydrodynamic tests, and focused high-explosive experiments at local firing sites and at the Nevada National Security Site. J Division also operates the Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Facility, the nation’s premier hydrodynamic testing resource. The Division continually works with the Nevada National Security Site, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, the Department of Energy, and other partners to enhance the capabilities necessary to certify and ensure the safe, secure, and reliable performance of nuclear weapons’ components, materials, and systems.
