Description
VOLUNTEER FIELD ASSISTANTS (4) needed approximately March 8 through May 20 2022 (EXACT DATES TBD). Field assistants will be investigating the behavior and ecology of Greater Sage-Grouse, an emblematic bird of the Western United States. During the 2.5-month field season, field assistants will live in Paradise Valley, Nevada, a scenic and largely underappreciated town surrounded by the remote and gorgeous Santa Rosa Mountains. Assistants will use video and audio recording technology to support a study of courtship dynamics and display plasticity on the lek. Duties include some or all of the following: maintaining camera and acoustic monitoring equipment, observation of basic courtship behavior and lek counts, capture of adult sage-grouse, data entry, and some computer and video analysis. The team will also spend long hours tracking birds and collecting habitat data as well as vegetation samples. Assistants must be flexible in their needs and comfortable living and working in close quarters in a remote field station, and able to work in adverse field conditions (mainly MUD, WIND, and COLD). Work will be daily and primarily early in the morning, with afternoon work required as well (we often have 12 hr+ field days). Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, basic computer skills, and must be capable of driving very early in the morning (sometimes at 2am) in the dark. Previous experience/certification with off-road driving and/or ATV’s is preferred but not required (individuals without ATV certification must be willing to learn and get certified in the field). It is also important that our applicants feel confident navigating terrain using a GPS and often times conducting fieldwork alone. Assistants will receive food, shared housing in a trailer, and $1800 in travel reimbursement. Please send a single PDF containing a cover letter, resume, and contact info for two (2) references to: Maria C. Ospina by email to [email protected]. The positions will remain open until filled, and review of applications will begin immediately.
Qualifications
Preferred candidates will have completed at least one previous field season, have ridden an ATV more than once, and have had experience animal handling.
