Global Writing & Speaking Fellowship, Academic Resource Center

The Global Writing & Speaking Fellowship is designed for graduating college seniors and young professionals. Fellows serve as English language writing and speaking tutors at the Academic Resource Center for undergraduates at NYU Shanghai. The fellowship will be a 10-month appointment from August 1, 2021 to May 31, 2022. Usually, a first-year Fellow can apply for a second-year returning fellowship for another 12 months.

The main responsibilities include: 

  • Provide academic support to NYU Shanghai students, including one-on-one tutoring consultations, new student orientation and in-class workshops, academic support for probation students, prospective student interviews, exam proctoring, etc.;
  • Provide support to different departments through Institutional Enrichment Projects. This might include mentoring student groups, developing support for students pursuing careers/graduate school, or launching new initiatives that contribute to intellectual life on campus;
  • Provide support to the larger community by staffing university-level events on a need basis;
  • Complete an independent writing project over the course of the academic year, with mentorship from a member of the NYU Shanghai Faculty;
  • Provide support to other tasks or projects when needed.


  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree within 3 years;
  • Excellent academic records and writing skills;
  • Experienced or have received professional training in academic writing in English;
  • Experience of teaching or tutoring writing is preferred;
  • Familiar with western higher education system and have a basic understanding of academic support for college students;
  • Willing to take initiative and share innovative ideas;
  • Good at communication, collaboration, time management, and multitasking;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently in a cross-cultural environment.

    • Writing tutoring (200-300 words) Please state your teaching philosophy in terms of writing tutoring. How do you imagine yourself providing tutoring and academic support to NYUSH students? 
    • English as a Second Language (200-300 words) Please show us how you would approach tutoring non-native speakers of English. 
    • Professional Development (200-300 words) Please show us what creative or critical work you plan to pursue in the coming years. Where do you see yourself in five years?
