Description
The Verble Lab at Missouri University of Science and Technology is recruiting five research fellows for Summer 2022 to conduct terrestrial arthropod surveys across Fort Leonard Wood military installation in Pulaski County, Missouri. This is part of a large-scale invertebrate biodiversity survey for the military base and will involve collection and identification efforts for multiple taxa. Fellowship positions run from 28 May to 1 July 2022 and include rustic lodging, board, and a $4,500 stipend to be paid in two payments, one at the beginning of the project and one at the completion of the project. Fellows are housed in a rural setting in the Mark Twain National Forest near Rolla, Missouri. Fellows must pay their own transportation costs to the housing site, but other costs on-site will be covered. Additionally, we are seeking partnerships with museums, taxonomy and systematics labs who may be interested in receiving specimens for identification and/or long-term storage. Terms of these partnerships are negotiable on a case-by-case basis, and we encourage any interested lab that may be interested in receiving or reviewing specimens to contact us via e-mail (below).
Qualifications
We are accepting applications from all interested parties at all education levels and with all backgrounds. We prefer applicants with some experience with insect identification and trapping methods. Formal entomological training and coursework is not required, but is ideal. Strong candidates will be resilient and adaptable in hot and humid field environments, capable of working and living in close proximity with a team for an extended period of time, and will be able to clearly and effectively communicate with peers, supervisors, and the public. At this time, we are only able to accept applications from U.S. citizens. Send your CV as a PDF attached to an e-mail to Dr. Robin Verble ([email protected]). In the e-mail, tell me who you are, why you want to do this work, and what experience you have working with insects. Also, in the e-mail, tell me who I should call for more information about you and give me their phone number.
