Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program

This program provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months. Projects deepen research knowledge on and help the nation develop capability in areas of the world not generally included in U.S. curricula. Projects focusing on Western Europe are not supported. There is a competitive preference for languages utilized that are not Spanish, French, or German. There is a competitive preference for research projects in modern foreign languages and area studies with an academic focus on any of the following academic fields: science (including climate change), technology, engineering (including infrastructure studies), mathematics, computer science, education (comparative or international), international development, political science, public health (including epidemiology), or economics. There is the possibility of funding for legal dependents who travel with the student for the duration of the research period.


Eligibility & Requirements

Must be advanced to doctoral candidacy at time of award activation, but may apply prior to advancing. Must have language skills necessary to carry out research. Must be nominated by the UCLA Division of Graduate Education. The student's application must be submitted through the appropriate channels at his or her university, and transmitted by by the university's Project Director.
