Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship

The Ford Foundation awards 36 one-year dissertation fellowships for diverse PhD and ScD students who hope to teach and research at a university level. Through its program of Fellowships, the Ford Foundation and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine seeks to increase the number of underrepresented groups of the nation’s college and university faculties. Applicants should expect to complete the dissertation during the following academic year. These fellowships are for promising doctoral students who hope to make an impact in research and education.


Eligibility & Requirements

For individuals committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level. Individuals should be working to complete a dissertation leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree. Individuals who have earned a doctoral degree are ineligible as are those pursuing professional degrees (such as EdD, PsyD) or joint degrees (such as MD/PhD). 3 letters of recommendation from professors. Membership in one or more of the following under-represented groups will be considered a positive factor: Alaska Natives (Aleuts, Eskimos or other Indigenous People of Alaska), Black/African-Americans, Mexican Americans/Chicanas/Chicanos, Native American Indians, Native Pacific Islanders (Hawaiians/Polynesians/Micronesians), or Puerto Ricans. Educational background list. Personal statement about diversity as an educational resource. Description of community service efforts. Statement of Previous Research and Scholarly Productivity. Dissertation plan and abstract.

Current Graduate Student. Working on Doctoral Dissertation.

Research-based fields of education are eligible if the major field of study is listed among the eligible programs and is used to describe the PhD or ScD program of the applicant (e.g., sociology of education, anthropology and education).
