Multiple Tenure/Tenure-Track Positions Fall 2020—IU School of Public Health-Bloomington
The Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington invites applications for multiple tenured/tenure-track Assistant/Associate/Full Professor positions by individuals who will contribute multidisciplinary perspectives, conceptual and methodological diversity, and research leadership and mentoring to the school’s efforts. This is part of an ambitious school wide expansion across all five departments that added 24 new faculty in 2019, and aims to add an additional 6-10 new faculty in 2020. School priority areas include opiate-related research, nutrition and obesity, exercise science, rural health, and randomized controlled trials; however, we are also open to high performing, accomplished individuals outside of these areas. For exceptional candidates, several named and endowed professorships may be an option. Senior level applicants with a research team are encouraged to apply, as cluster hires are possible, especially on opioid addictions research. Women scholars, scholars with disabilities, and scholars from traditionally underrepresented minority groups are highly encouraged to apply. Dual-career hires are also a possibility. Each of the faculty hired will have tenure homes in a department within SPH-B; links to specific departmental websites are noted below. The anticipated hire date for these appointments is August 1, 2020 although this is negotiable with the ability to start earlier. The Department of Applied Health Science (AHS) comprises approximately 70 faculty and professional staff members, offers BSPH, B.S., M.S., and/or MPH degrees in behavioral, social and community health; public health administration; school and college health education; safety management; nutrition science; dietetics; and human development and family studies as well as a highly regarded PhD in health behavior. Faculty pursue research in a wide array of areas including alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse prevention, addiction sciences, HIV/STD prevention, human sexuality, sexual and reproductive health, food and nutrition sciences, eating behaviors, obesity, scientific rigor and reproducibility, maternal and child health, population health, public health policy, and application of health behavior theory.
The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health is committed to the improvement of public health through evidence-based research, community outreach, professional service, and training of future research scientists and public health professionals in various environmental and occupational health settings. Our diverse faculty conduct laboratory and field based multidisciplinary research in environmental toxicology, risk assessment, environmental and occupational epidemiology, vector-borne disease, global environmental health and other topics of public health importance in the U.S., and other parts of the world. The department equipped with 12 faculty and currently offers BSPH, MPH, and Ph.D. degrees in environmental health with a new M.S. in environmental and occupational health.
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is committed to broadening our understanding of the determinants of health outcomes and to providing statistical and methodological expertise on topics in human health. These two fields of study are the cornerstone of public health research and practice. Our faculty conduct research on a broad range of health outcomes and exposures and are seeking candidates with backgrounds that will complement our existing expertise in nutrition, genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, health disparities, vector-borne disease, and infectious disease epidemiology. Our department currently offers BSPH, MPH, and Ph.D. degrees in epidemiology and an MPH degree in biostatistics.
The Department of Kinesiology is committed to advancing public health through the study of movement throughout the lifespan. The department is one of the most comprehensive kinesiology departments in the country. This unique environment permits our faculty to take multidisciplinary approaches to understand and solve some of the most complex and pressing health-related issues. The department houses laboratories dedicated to research in kinesiology related fields, including clinical neurotrauma, biomechanics, motor control/learning, exercise physiology, and physical activity. Kinesiology offers degrees in exercise science, sports marketing and management, athletic training, and a BSPH- fitness and wellness. The department also offers an MPH in physical activity, an M.S. in kinesiology and a Ph.D. in human performance.
The Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Studies is committed to the development of research, teaching, and service in recreation and leisure behavior toward the promotion of health. The department’s areas of specialization are in public, nonprofit, and community recreation; recreational therapy; tourism, hospitality, and event management; and outdoor recreation, parks, and human Ecology. The department works closely with community-based organizations in addition to local, state and national agencies in cooperative research, education, and internship opportunities. The department offers a variety of course offerings at the undergraduate level, both online and campus Master degree programs, a unique online MPH in Parks and Recreation, and a long-standing Ph.D. program.

Responsibilities: Conduct research, secure external funding, and engage with other faculty in collaborative teaching and community engagement efforts related to the school’s priority areas. Successful candidates will provide evidence of the potential to secure extramural grants, conduct research, write for peer-reviewed publications, and teach undergraduate and graduate classes in the candidates’ area of expertise.
Qualifications: Candidates must hold a doctoral degree by anticipated start date from an accredited educational institution. Candidates must also demonstrate a record of scholarly achievement appropriate for career level, including extramurally funded research, current funding or strong potential to secure external funding, the ability to collaborate across disciplines, and a positive team spirit.
