A fellowship opportunity is available in the Water, Food and Environmental Health Services Branch (WFEHSB) within the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice (DEHSP) of the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
WFEHSB’s mission is to enhance and revitalize environmental public health to address a range of environmental health issues. Within WFEHSB, the selected participant will join the Safe Water Section to support their efforts on recreational water, small drinking water systems, untreated recreational water, and Legionella prevention and control projects. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will learn with team members on activities like the following:
- Design and implementation of recreational water and Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC), Microplastics, safe drinking water (private wells) projects and activities
- Database development and quantitative analysis of data collected for Safe Water section projects
- Development of manuscripts based on data from Safe Water Section projects
- Literature reviews related safe drinking water, building water management systems, recreational water and emergency response.
- Planning meetings of Environmental Health Capacity and Legionella Cooperative Agreements
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: January 11, 2021 (start date is flexible)
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Funds are available for travel and health insurance allowance. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
*Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, CDC is limiting occupancy on campuses. Successful applicants will be required to train remotely until further notice.*
Skills/Eligibility:The qualified candidate should have received a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Preferred skills:
- Clear writing skills
- Experience in research and analysis
- Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Experience conducting data analysis with statistical software (SPSS, R, SAS)
- Experience with Environmental Health and Practice
- Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Excel
- Knowledge of infectious diseases, especially waterborne and water washed illnesses
- Knowledge of building water systems/premise plumbing systems
- Knowledge of biostatistics and epidemiological principles and methodologies
- Data management skills and quality assurance
- Ability to understand and interpret analytical results
- Ability to work on a team in a virtual environment
