Cities are complex built environments that integrate the physical, natural, and social worlds of human settlement. The discovery of new solutions to address our most pressing needs and challenges with regard to cities is rooted in the presence of and engagement between residents with diverse knowledge, abilities, and experiences. At the same time, the legacy of slavery and a prolonged history of social segregation and economic and political disenfranchisement of African-Americans continues to undermine the power of urban diversity. Although much has been done to address the negative aspects of this history, much more needs to be done to make American cities more equitable, healthy, fair, safe and beautiful.
The Race and Gender in the Built Environment of the American City initiative establishes an Emerging Scholar Fellowship position, the purpose of which is to support the development of future faculty whose work centers on relationships between race, gender, and the built environment in the fields represented in the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin. While the Fellow will directly contribute to a discipline(s) in the School of Architecture (Architecture, Community and Regional Planning, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Sustainable Design, and Interior Design), he or she may also engage scholars across campus in programs and departments, such as, American Studies, African and African Diaspora Studies, and the Institute for Urban Policy Research & Analysis, in support of his or her research and teaching.
For the 2019-2020 academic year, the School of Architecture is seeking a Fellow who is addressing issues of race or gender in the built environment through creative design practice. The 9-month fellowship includes both design studio and topical seminar teaching related to the candidate’s area of interest (one design studio in the Fall semester and one seminar in the Spring semester), pursuit of creative and scholarly work, and the opportunity to publicly share the outcome of the fellowship with the school (through lectures, exhibitions, etc.).
The successful candidate will hold a professional degree complemented by creative practice that visibly demonstrates a rigorous investigation of design implications addressing race and gender in the built environment.
