Description
Monitoring tributary populations of salmon, steelhead, and native trout is an integral part of evaluating habitat restorations and fisheries management actions in the Salmon Region. As a member of the Anadromous Screening and Habitat Crew, you will be part of an electrofishing and snorkel crew performing fisheries surveys throughout the Salmon Region. Summer field work occurs from June through August, and during this time you will work 8 day field hitches throughout the Upper Salmon River Basin. As a crew member, you will work througout the Salmon Region, an area encompassing wilderness rivers, the high peaks of the Sawtooth and White Cloud ranges, and massive alpine lakes of the Sawtooth Valley. The town of Salmon is situated at the confluence of the Lemhi and Salmon Rivers, and offers many opportunities for mountain biking, backpacking, paddling, fishing, and hunting. In our office you will find community, opportunities to challenge yourself, and mentorship towards your fisheries career. Responsibilities: Primary duties include performing snorkel, habitat, and backpack electrofishing surveys in back-country streams while working with a crew of 4 members. Summer field work will be performed on a 8-day on, 6-day off schedule. Depending on the individual, spawning survey work or data entry work may be available in the fall as part of this project. Field work will also include: handling and PIT-tagging salmonids (including ESA- listed fish), collecting biological data (weights, lengths, DNA, scales, etc.), maintaining field equipment, assisting in PIT-tag array maintenance, spawning ground surveys, operating weirs. Additional duties may include: data management (recording, organizing, and error checking in multiple databases).
