Douglas L. Conley was an ASU undergraduate physical education major, a cross-country runner and coach, and ultimately an ASU doctoral student who received his PhD in 1979 under the direction of ASU Senior Vice President & Deputy Provost, Gary Krahenbuhl. Doug’s research interests focused on distance running performance, particularly running economy. Unfortunately, Doug was killed in an automobile accident shortly after receiving his PhD. The Conley Scholarship was established in Doug’s name by his family in memory of his academic and coaching interests related to running.

Additional criteria: 

- Recipient must be involved in research in the physiology of exercise. Preference will be given to students pursuing research related to applied aspects of physical activity and exercise performance. Please explain in the research abstract essay.
- Recipient will ideally be a masters student in Strength and Conditioning or Clinical Exercise Physiology or PhD student in Exercise and Nutritional Sciences (specifically in the Exercise track whose mentor/dissertation chair is a Kinesiology or Exercise and Wellness program faculty and the student's dissertation reflects the scope of exercise science).
-Recipient can be a bachelors student in kinesiology who is involved in research either by being heavily involved in a faculty lab or working on their own research project through independent work study or honors thesis.
