A research opportunity is currently available with the Emergency Response and Recovery Branch (ERRB), within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in projects related to disease surveillance in complex humanitarian emergencies.

The participant will be learning a variety of skills related to the design, implementation and evaluation of emergency surveillance systems focusing on communicable and non-communicable diseases, mortality, and community-based surveillance. These skills include but are not limited to the development of standardized protocols, procedures and training materials; setup, implementation, analysis and reporting of surveillance data; technical assistance to partners; and program monitoring and evaluation of systems. The participant will have opportunities to design and implement data collection and evaluation studies in the field applicable to disease surveillance in humanitarian settings. The participant will participate in meetings and collaborate with a variety of governmental, non-governmental and UN organizations. This opportunity may involve international travel.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: March 2021

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Additional Details:


The qualified candidate should have received a master’s degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree with completion by March 2021. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Preferred skills:

  • Working knowledge of at least one major statistical package, such as SAS, R, SPSS or STATA
  • Experience in planning, implementing or evaluating disease surveillance systems
  • Prior global experience (living and/or working internationally), including in humanitarian settings
  • Prior experience in infectious disease epidemiology
  • Command of the French language
