The Director of the Center for Student Engagement promotes student engagement and a sense of belonging, and enhances campus community through the integration of co-curricular involvement.  They represent student co-curricular involvement as an institutional priority in a variety of contexts, supervise the access to - and the allocation of - student organization benefits, works with faculty and student advisory boards, and advises students.  Reporting to an Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, the Director of the Center for Student Engagement has duties that include but are not limited to:

Overall Direction and Leadership

Strategic Direction

  • Provide strategic planning and goal setting for all areas of student programming, including Outdoor Education, Student Organizations, Club Sports, Student Media, New Student Orientation, Policy Debate, and Leadership Programs
  • Ensure programs are aligned with institutional mission and goals for co-curricular experience, integrating priorities from various sources, including the Georgetown Campus Plan, Student Affairs Strategic Plan, Student Life Report and others
  • Conduct program evaluations and assessments using qualitative and quantitative methods in order to refine and improve programs and services; and provide program direction through strategic planning, quality management, project management, and assessment in order to make the most efficient use of resources

Supervision

  • Manage staff in order to set clear goals and develop realistic plans for their achievement; and meet weekly or bi-weekly with staff, provide clear communication and provide for continued professional growth of staff
  • Plan and implement staff development efforts, including annual retreats, conferences, performance reviews, and comprehensive staff alignment

Budgeting

  • Create, oversee and monitor budget, including all student activity fee funded programs and initiatives, totaling over $3 million in revenues and expenses
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies and regulations for staff directed programs and all student organizations
  • Oversee and implement complex financial transactions
  • Provide training to staff on completion of financial transactions and decision making

Assessment

  • Oversee and implement comprehensive assessment strategies that seek to understand and provide data-driven evidence of student learning and engagement through co-curricular involvement
  • Ensure that all assessment activities are compliant with IRB standards and policies
  • Use and share student engagement data as appropriate to inform programmatic planning

Participate actively in co-curricular advising and supervising of student organizations and student leaders

  • Advise the Senior Class Executive Board and Committee who generate and host complex, high risk programming for the entire senior class, with revenues and expenses totaling between $750K and $1M annually
  • Advise student government (GUSA) on areas of student representation and advocacy on behalf of the student body
  • Advise Media Board and media organizations to ensure highest standards of journalistic quality and effective functioning as student organizations
  • Ensure advising policies and practices promote a learning-centered, student-centered environment focused on developmental growth and mission-integration

Oversee the distribution of resources to student life programs

  • Oversee the allocation of over $4 million in student activity fees and other sources of funding annually to ensure a rich and varied tradition of student engagement programs
  • Work closely with faculty and student advisory boards to provide support and direction for student organizations. 
  • Provide an opportunity for faculty involvement in co-curricular programs in order to strengthen the overall educational impact of student involvement
  • Supervise the access to, and allocation of student organization benefits (including funding and student center office space) in order to ensure that University resources are utilized most effectively, and are consistent with funding priorities and accepted conduct at a university committed to the Catholic and Jesuit tradition
  • Develop, implement, and monitor policies for student organizations, special events, and campus facilities use in order to make sure that student organization involvement is a significant learning experience, and that university resources are appropriately utilized and consistent with proper risk management procedures and university priorities. 

Lead university-wide student engagement efforts to support and advance co-curricular learning

  • Standardize and oversee the mechanism for student leader advising to ensure that programs are well planned and foster a developmental learning environment
  • Liaise with offices such as the Center for Social Justice, Department of Performing Arts, and Campus Ministry to ensure that co-curricular engagement is intentionally structured and consistent
  • Establish policies designed to manage risk of university resources regarding financial, safety and wellness, and public affairs exposure
  • Oversee all student-planned events for which alcohol is served; and train and certify servers of alcohol
  • Ensure that student involvement is a high quality learning experience, and that student organization programs are consistent with overall university priorities 
  • Help students in a variety of student organizations negotiate conflicts, set goals, and develop action plans in order to accomplish their goals; and advise students in the resolution of organizational problems, personal concerns and career development options in order to enhance their overall learning experience

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling or a related field
  • 10+ years of years of full time, post-graduate professional experience in relevant, progressively responsible leadership within Student Engagement or Campus Life
  • Demonstrable, thoughtful and informed leadership on issues facing practitioners in contemporary higher education, including equity, inclusion and social justice on college campuses; the balance between respecting freedom of speech and support for community; and strategies for promoting health and well-being through social engagement
  • Strong background in student development and leadership theory and the ability to translate theory to practice
  • Ability to balance conceptual priorities with practical logistics
  • Attention to detail, ability to multi-task
  • Flexible and responsive to a variety of situations
  • A genuine interest in working with students and staff across the University
  • Supervisory experience and demonstrated experience with administration, knowledge of student development theory, and legal issues
  • Proven management of significant financial and human resources
  • Availability and willingness to work during non-traditional hours in support of student activities
