Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. The College is a dynamic learning organization that serves as a Germanna regional leader and preferred partner where quality learning experiences enable students to participate effectively in the social, economic, political, intellectual, and cultural life of their communities. Germanna Community College is centrally located in Fredericksburg, VA between Washington D.C. and Richmond and between the Blue Ridge mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. Full of history, the area offers a community rich with diversity, the arts, technology, vineyards, hiking, canoeing/kayaking, and many other activities.
Reporting to the Special Assistant to the President for Strategic Initiatives, the Director of Grants and External Funds is responsible for maximizing support from corporations, foundations, and appropriate government sources through grants and contracts. The Director of Grants and External Funds is responsible for leading cross-functional teams through the grant life cycle, from conceptualization to final proposal submission. This includes pre-award coordination of all grant applications for the college and post-award support for all staff and/or faculty in administering grant-funded projects.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Researches and identifies public and private grant and external funding sources that are compatible with the goals of the institution.
  • Develops and maintains a grants calendar to track cultivation activities, grant submissions, deadlines, follow-up reporting, and program evaluation.
  • Supervises the development of proposals; conducts research on grant topics to add depth to proposals; and prepares institutional background and capability statements, area information, and other narratives of a general nature for inclusion in grant proposals.
  • Maintains up-to-date reports on all proposal submissions including documentation of dollars requested vs. awarded.
  • Collaborates with Business Office to initiate required federal, state, and internal paperwork and develops or reviews proposal budgets.
  • Prepares correspondence accepting grants and confers with project administrators in preparing correspondence amending grants.
  • Establishes benchmarks and standards for reporting on grant and external funding activities and results.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field from accredited college or university
  • Demonstrated ability to research and identify funding opportunities
  • History of collaborating with teams to develop grant concepts, write proposals, and meet deadlines
  • Prior experience providing guidance and leadership for post-award grants administration
  • Ability to multi-task and meet frequent deadlines
  • Excellent writing and proof-reading skills
  • Ability to work with broad and diverse variety of individuals and teams with tact, professionalism, and confidentiality
  • Experience with or willingness to learn AI tools.

Additional Considerations
  • Master’s or doctoral degree in related field from accredited college or university
  • Experience with navigating online submission portals
  • Successful track record developing and submitting complex federal and state grant applications
