ROLE of the POSITION

Under the direction of the Associate Director for Student Union Facilities & Operations, the Custodial Supervisor I will supervise, train and assist custodian team members when and where necessary on presentation, cleanliness, organization and minor maintenance issues within the Student Union. This individual will assist with maintaining department equipment (vacuums, dryers, scrubbers, rider equipment, etc.) including light mechanical repairs, routine review of equipment function/operation and securing of University property when not in use. Individual will also assist with low level building maintenance tasks which may include, but are not limited to the changing of light bulbs, unclogging of toilets, repairing leaky faucets, and limited repair of furniture. The Custodial Supervisor I will conduct regular rounds of the Student Union (Interior and Exterior of the building), record notes, provide feedback and observations in custodial log on all custodial duties and maintain accurate notes of reported issues and outstanding/incomplete items. Additional duties include reaching for and maintaining building standards that meet APPA (Associate of Physical Plant Administrators) standards.

The Custodial Supervisor I will be responsible for administrative tasks/duties including:

  • Work Order submittal, following up on custodians work performance throughout day/evening, reviewing, understanding and administering of the corrective action process (Progressive Discipline),  routine review of the department calendar program (Kinetic Calendar) for room reservations and access to spaces for custodial related work, routine review of the custodial schedule for custodian's shifts, maintain a clean office/work area, holding regular meetings with custodial members individually and as a shift/team for information distribution and training purposes, maintaining/reviewing proper use of employee leave (Sick, Annual or Comp Time), administering scheduled performance/appraisal reviews of custodial team members, participating in the search, hiring and training of custodial team members, and providing feedback and response in a timely fashion to the appropriate individual(s) in a professional manner regarding areas of concern.

Custodial Supervisor is responsible for:

  • Maintaining all interior areas (that are not food service, kitchen area or mechanical function) of the Student Union including meeting rooms, offices, hallways, closets/storage rooms, stairways, entrances/exits, dining area, studying/gathering areas, lounges, the Game Room, the Theater, the SORCE Room, the Scarlet & Grey Free Press Offices, the Student Involvement & Activities/Service Learning & Leadership Offices, CSUN Offices, Information Technology Offices, the Computer Lab, the Rebel Card Office, Rebel Copy Send work space, and the Intersection work space.  Limited cleanliness responsibilities will be applied to some retail outlets which may include Starbucks, the POD Convenience Store, US Bank.
  • Maintaining immediate exterior areas (that are not food service or Campus Grounds) of the Student Union including trash/waste bins, sidewalks, stairways, cart parking area, PIDA Plaza, the Courtyard, the East Entrance steps and walkways and the loading dock area.
  • Maintaining a safe work environment for users of the building, for custodial members of the team and for self.

As the Custodial Supervisor I will be a representative of the department and the facilities team, the individual in this position must maintain a positive attitude when communicating with custodial team members, department and student life colleagues, customers/guests, staff, students, and building partners and staff team members. Individual must be able to help promote a positive work environment for increased staff morale. Individual must be able to change, adapt and be flexible during a time of transition in a dynamic work environment. Individual must be will and available to participate, when requested by the Associate Director for Facilities, in special assignments, training assignments, special events and/or events/meetings (days, nights, weekends and holidays) as related to the position.  Individual must successfully complete all required Human Resource training course including those under the NVeLearn.com program.  Individual will be required to participate in "cross training" to learn operational functions of other shifts. Individual will complete special assignments, when requested by the Associate Director for Facilities, items by the end of the shift and/or as soon as possible, or after the request is made, within reason.

The typical work week for this position is:

Monday through Friday - 2:30p to 11p

Saturday and Sunday Scheduled Off Days

(work week may change based on needs of department; advance notice provided )

The Custodial Supervisor I will, from time to time, be required to work outside their standard work schedule including special events, holidays, weekends, late evenings, and/or early mornings as determined by the Associate Director for Student Union Facilities and Operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of building custodial and general building maintenance work, one year of which must have included lead experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Knowledge of calendar and event tracking software (Kinetic Software)

Knowledge of Google related applications (mail, calendar, sheets, docs, drive, slides)

Knowledge of building equipment and proper maintenance (floor machines, riders, lifts, extractors, etc.)

Knowledge of "Green" or sustainability cleaning products and practices

Ability to forecast, plan ahead and identify potential conflicts/problems in advance

Is prepared with possible solutions to challenges and/or problems that arise

Is punctual, on time and ready to begin at start of shift (arrives early to prepare)

Is effective in managing time, assignments and daily tasks

Willingness to want to learn more, know more and do more within the Student Union department

SALARY

Grade 26, Step 1, salary $ 35,328.96 . "Step" means the number assigned by the Division of Human Resource Management to identify a specific rate of pay within a grade. Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
