The Resident Assistant (RA) is a student member of the Eileen Panigeo MacLean House. They are responsible for working closely with staff and students in creating and maintaining an atmosphere that promotes student development and acceptance of diversity through group living in University residence halls.  The RA is responsible for developing and implementing culturally relevant programming that fosters a transitional residential and community living setting for students coming to UAF from rural Alaska and Native communities; this atmosphere should reflect the communal lifestyle of rural Alaska and traditional Native values, serving as a comfortable transitional environment for rural Native students as well as diversified cultural experience for non-Native students/residents. The RA will assume specific responsibility for a designated area with the residence hall. The position carries part-time, live-in responsibilities with the appointment made on a yearly basis.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Demonstrate understanding of indigenous culture and regional diversity in Alaska's Native cultures, particularly those of the North Slope and Inupait
Demonstrate leadership potential and/or previous leadership experience
Ability to communicate (written/verbal) effectively with all types of people
Ability to understand work to be done, organize that work and complete work in a timely manner
Ability to analyze information, problem solve and use sound judgment in decision making
Ability work independently as well as collaboratively
Knowledge of basic computer software such as word processing
Ability to work a minimum of 3 week nights starting at 7pm and ending at 8 am, not including Friday or Saturday in those week nights

A commitment of one full academic year (or the remainder of such at the time of hire)

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

Applicant must have a cumulative and semester grade point average of 2.3 or above (3.0, graduate student) at the time of application and hire
Applicant must be a full-time student at UAF (12 undergraduate credits/9 graduate credits)
Applicant may not be on academic probation nor any form of University or residential disciplinary probation
Applicant must be available to maintain a schedule that ensures student contact, particularly during evening hours and weekends
Student teachers and varsity athletes are not eligible for RA positions, due to time commitments
At the time of hire, must have applied for housing through the Department of Residence Life/MacLean House and paid deposit and application fees
Must be available to work for the duration of the RA contract period, beginning August of he start of the academic year through May (dates will be discussed during the interview) Contract dates are subject to change.

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:

Extensive knowledge of Alaska's Native cultural groups and values systems.

Preference is given to applicants with a minimum of two semesters of community living experience prior to their term of employment. It is also given to applicants with rural experience or experience with Alaska Native cultures.

This position is hired on an as-needed basis.
