CDC Office and Location: Multiple research opportunities are currently available with the Center for Global Health (CGH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. Research Project: Numerous exciting opportunities are currently available to support CDC's COVID-19 global response efforts. CDC's COVID-19 global response efforts are led by the International Task Force and supported by numerous programs across the agency. The International Task Force is a multi-disciplinary team of subject matter experts who provide technical assistance to more than 70 countries around the world. The goals of CDC’s global response to COVID-19 are to limit human-to-human transmission, minimize the impact of COVID-19 in vulnerable countries with limited preparedness capacity, and reduce specific threats that pose current and future risk to the United States. CDC’s global COVID-19 response works toward these goals by meeting the following objectives: - Strengthen capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to local COVID-19 cases, including getting timelier and more accurate data to inform public health decision-making and strengthening the public health workforce globally - Mitigate COVID-19 transmission in the community, across borders, and in healthcare facilities; prevent transmission of COVID-19 in healthcare facilities, among healthcare workers and public health personnel and minimize disruptions to essential health services - Contribute to the scientific understanding of COVID-19 and address crucial unknowns regarding clinical severity, extent and pathways of transmission, and infection with support for special investigations - Ensure readiness to implement and evaluate vaccination programs and use therapeutics when available CDC’s technical support is delivered in coordination with other U.S. government agencies and other stakeholders including multilateral organizations. Learning Objectives: As part of this announcement, participants will gain experience in the following critical areas as part of CDC's global COVID-19 response efforts: 1. Epidemiology and Surveillance - Monitor and track current epidemiology hot topics within the scope of the ITF epidemiology team (e.g. molecular epidemiology/strain surveillance) - Provide technical assistance to countries requesting support in analyzing COVID-19 trends from vital statistics or mortality surveillance systems - Define core metrics for mortality surveillance for routine use in countries 2. Laboratory Systems Strengthening and Bioinformatics - Track and edit methodologies for SARS-CoV-2 sequencing on multiple platforms. - Review bioinformatics protocols for quality determination and analysis of sequencing data. - Assist with the collection of laboratory information regarding nucleic acid extraction methods, molecular SARS-CoV-2 assays, testing platforms, sample collection methods, molecular laboratory outputs, antigen testing, and sequencing from CDC supported countries 3. Data Visualization and Management - Develop and maintain PowerBI dashboards related to COVID-19 burden internationally and regionally for internal and external leadership/public audiences - Perform data mining and cleaning to convert data into its desired form - Provide analysis and interpretation of global trends in COVID-19 cases, deaths, testing, etc. - Assist in maintenance of Github repository for R code 4. Program Management - Support overall strategic management of COVID-19 activities across multiple countries - Collaborate with technical subject matter experts on implementation of activities, connecting project goals to on-the-ground impact. 5. Emergency Management and Response - To tailor existing training/materials on emergency management to include COVID-19 specific information, processes and scenarios (as relevant) to create a standardized training package for countries to use - Support the development of tools and guidance on COVID-19 emergency response capacity development Mentor(s): The mentor for this opportunity is Sarah Hedges ([email protected]). Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds. Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time. Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date. Preferred skills: - Familiarity with software: Microsoft Office - One or more of the following spatial and statistical analysis software programs: SAS, R, GI R, GIS - Knowledge of the concepts, principle, practices, methods, and techniques of administering, implementing and monitoring public health programs in international settings - Thorough knowledge of written and oral communication techniques in order to make presentations, provide program consultation, respond to program inquiries, and write reports and manuscripts to further disseminate scientific knowledge - Understanding of detailed report writing, surveillance, and monitoring and evaluation activities - Ability to manage interpersonal relationships with persons of diverse backgrounds in a mature manner
