Scholarship information

M. Elizabeth Holman and her family established the Calvin M. Holman Political Science Scholarship in April 2008 to honor her husband, Calvin M. Holman. Calvin served 10 years in the Arizona Legislature, representing constituents in Paradise Valley, North Phoenix, and Sun City. This scholarship is a tribute to his dedication and service to the citizens of Arizona. It is the family's hope that this scholarship will encourage students to explore service in the legislature and a career in legislative affairs.

Additional criteria: 

Only applicants that meet all of the following requirements will be considered for the scholarship:

  • Applicant must be a Political Science major (BA or BS) in the School of Politics and Global Studies.
  • Applicant must be a Tempe campus student.
  • Applicant must be an undergraduate student.
  • Applicant must be a full-time student.
  • Applicant must have reached at least junior standing at the time the application is made (56 completed hours on DARS).
  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Applicant must have a cumulative gpa of 3.25 or higher. 
  • Applicant must submit an essay of no more than 1200 words on the topic: "What can I do to improve/change/strengthen our political system?"
  • Applicant must include a description of any political activities to date.

  • Donor preferences: 

    Preferential consideration will be given to applicants who meet the above requirements and demonstrate the following:

  • Indication of whether student is interested in the legislative area of politics. 
  • Financial need may be considered but is not a requirement.

    Applicants must provide required information through portal app by published deadline to be considered for this scholarship. Applications with incorrect spelling and/or grammar may be eliminated from consideration. A complete application includes these documents:

  • Portal app information.
  • An essay of no more than 1200 words on the topic (provide answer in "Social Impact Essay" or upload under "Additional documentation" section): “What can I do to improve/change/strengthen our political system?”
  • Brief description of the applicant’s political activities to date. (provide answer in "Community Service and Learning Experiences" section)
