What You Will Do

Teams within the Bioscience Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) perform research in a broad array of applications of biotechnology and life sciences, working to solve national bioenergy, public health, and biosecurity challenges—from naturally occurring or manmade threats—requiring an in-depth understanding of pathogens, plants, and human disease.

The Bioscience Division is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic post-baccalaureate’s student interested in microbiology research. In particular a person with interest in human microbiome, molecular biology and cell culture. The successful candidate will work with a team of scientists, technicians, and post-master students. The ideal student must be meticulous in their work, quick-learner, and able to communicate (verbally and in writing) in a professional manner. Depending on the performance of the student and funding availability, the term of appointment is 1 to 2 years.

The student will also act as a representative for the Biosecurity and Public Health Team by attending group and team meetings. Responsibilities include assisting research experiments, recording and reporting results back to the team at weekly meetings. In addition, the student is encouraged to attend seminars and other LANL functions to expand his/her knowledge base and broaden interests. The student will also have the opportunity to participate in local and national networking events.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

• General background in biology, molecular biology, and microbiology

• Familiarity with good laboratory practices and biological experiment design

• Demonstrated competency with computers and software applications for word processing, data processing, and data visualization

• Ability to maintain and record work performed in detail, collect data for Analysts, in addition to writing and following detailed protocols

• Ability to understand and present research results clearly and succinctly in both written and oral formats

• Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week on a consistent schedule

• Ability to manage time and see tasks to completion with minimal micromanagement

• Must submit both a resume and cover letter

Desired Qualifications:

• Ideally the candidate has interest and/or experience in microbiome, molecular biology and/or cell culture research

• Entry level exposure or experience in biological safety laboratories (BSL-2 preferred but not necessary)

Education: A bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, microbiology, or related technical field obtained at the time of hire or within the past 3 years, but have not yet been accepted and enrolled in a graduate program.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2-Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
