Arizona State University’s Chicano/Latino Faculty and Staff Association (CLFSA) will select students for the endowed Laura Rendón Scholarship for 2024-2025 academic year. Dr. Rendón is a nationally renowned educator who, for eight years, served as Professor in ASU’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. As a professor, mentor and active member of ASU’s Chicano/Latino faculty community, she taught graduate-level courses on Cultural Pluralism in Education, Professional Seminar in Higher Education and Student Diversity in Higher Education. She was also a member of the Research Faculty with the ASU’s Hispanic Research Center. Upon Dr. Rendón’s departure from ASU, and through her generosity, CLFSA endowed its scholarship in her name. Each year, CLFSA pays tribute to her leadership; character and academic excellence by awarding three students whose academic merit demonstrates these same virtues that will impact the Chicano/Latino community.

PREFERENCE VS REQUIREMENT
Preference, as indicated on the application, applies to a scoring metric. If candidates meet the preferred criteria they may be awarded additional points to their application.
FIRST GENERATION:
Preference is given to first-generation students. A first-generation student is defined as neither of the student’s parents has received a baccalaureate degree from any college or university. Students with siblings who are in college but their parents did not graduate with a degree are considered first-generation students.

EXPECTATIONS OF SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT:
In accordance with the mission of the Chicano/Latino Faculty Staff Association (CLFSA), all chosen scholarship recipients must engage with members of the organization in its efforts to advocate for inclusion as a working value of the University.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT REQUIREMENT
In order to create opportunities to connect with one another and CLFSA members, chosen scholars will be required to attend networking socials, committees, and service programs where they can meet with potential mentors and establish academic and career connections. Below are the requirements and expectations for scholars.
• CLFSA scholars are required to attend two cultural events. These events can be an ASU Hispanic Heritage Month event in the fall and/or cultural events in the spring. For a list of events, see events that fall under culture @ASU (https://hsi.asu.edu/hispanic-heritage ).
• Scholars are also required to attend a minimum of one CLFSA event or meeting in the fall and one in the spring. We strongly encourage scholars to attend the CLFSA Fall Welcome and the End of the Year Celebration in the spring to allow scholars the opportunity to further engage with the CLFSA community.
MENTORING PROGRAM REQUIREMENT
Once chosen, CLFSA Scholars will receive a list of active CLFSA members who will be available to serve as a mentor. Mentors and Scholars must meet twice per semester, with the first meeting being one in which tentative meeting dates are discussed and set. Scholars are required to log and provide a reflection of their mentoring experience at the end of the academic year.
In addition, students selected for this award will be a part of the Latino Partnership Scholars Program. Participation in the program will include academic and professional development, peer networking opportunities, and additional mentorship.
Donor preferences:
1. Be a graduate of an Arizona high school; a graduate of an Arizona community college; or a current ASU Student. You must also be classified as an Arizona resident for tuition purposes (residency is determined at the time of application to ASU). 2. Must attend or have been admitted to ASU.
3. A student, for CLFSA scholarship purposes is defined as attending an Arizona State University campus which does not include an online campus.
4. Must file 2024/2025 FAFSA, or if not eligible to file FAFSA complete the CSS Profile (https://cssprofile.collegeboard.org/ ), by the Arizona State University priority deadline of May 1, 2024.
5. Must enroll at ASU full-time (12 credit hours is considered full-time).
6. Minimum of 3.0 (unweighted) GPA on a 4.0 (or equivalent) for high school students.
7. Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA for current ASU scholars.
8. Participants in the Obama Scholar program are ineligible for ASU Latino Partnership scholarships.
9. Students awarded a National Scholars Award (National Merit Finalist, National Recognition) or Flinn Semifinalist are ineligible for ASU Latino Partnership scholarships.
10. ASU Latino Partnership scholarships will not exceed the value of stated resident tuition and fees for each respective academic year when combined with the Qualified Tuition Reduction (QTR, a benefit for faculty and staff) or other tuition reduction programs (or waivers).
11. The ASU Latino Partnership Scholars is comprised of the following partners: Si Se Puede Foundation, Chicano/Latino Faculty and Staff Association, Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc., ASU Hispanic Business Alumni Association, and Los Diablos Alumni Association. ASU students are able to apply for more than one of the ASU Latino Partnership Scholars awards but can only be awarded one ASU Latino Partnership Scholars award.
12. Each scholarship will be distributed equally over two semesters in an academic year.
13. Scholarships are awarded on a one-time basis and may affect financial aid packages.
14. Recipients must re-apply to be reconsidered for any future awards within this program.
