The Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics is putting together the 2024-2025 ASU-Chautauqua Student Advisory Board. This group will work collaboratively with Lincoln Center staff and faculty to co-create programming focused on ethics and technology for the summer 2025 season. The Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics has enjoyed a longstanding relationship with the Chautauqua Institution. For over 150 years, The Institution, located in Chautauqua, NY, has been a center for adult education and interfaith conversations. About the Chautauqua Institution: https://www.chq.org/about/

The Chautauqua Institution is a not-for-profit, 750-acre community on Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York State where approximately 7,500 people are in residence on any day during a nine-week summer season. More than 100,000 attend scheduled public events each year and even more engage online via the streaming channel CHQ Assembly. Chautauqua is dedicated to the exploration of the best in human values and the enrichment of life through programming that explores the important religious, social and political issues of our times; stimulates provocative, thoughtful involvement of individuals and families in creative response to such issues; and promotes excellence and creativity in the appreciation, performance and teaching of the arts. The Institution celebrates its sesquicentennial in 2024.

Their programming exists across “four pillars”:
Education. Lectures and classes, with nine thematic weekly foci each summer (current 2024 season located here). Past speakers and participants include artists, religious figures, public scholars, noted industry representatives, and politicians—even former presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Bill Clinton have spoken at the Chautauqua Institution.
The Arts. Concerts, professional ensembles and student showcases across dance, chamber music, galleries, orchestra, theater, and opera (current 2024 season located here).
Cross-denominational religious and spiritual offerings. This includes invited spiritual leaders and a thematic, weekly interfaith lecture series (current 2024 season located here).
Recreation. Located lakeside, the Institution offers kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, sailing, bicycling, and a variety of recreational classes. (current 2024 offerings here).

Participation in the ASU-Chautauqua Student Advisory Board will include two trips during the 2024-2025 academic year. In the spring 2024, our group will travel to Washington, DC, to meet with representatives from the Chautauqua Institution to plan and develop programming for the summer 2025 season. In addition, our group will travel to Chautauqua, NY, for 1 week to facilitate and participate in programming during the summer 2025 season.

Students who are selected to be on the ASU-Chautauqua Student Advisory Board will be given a $2,000 scholarship during the 2024-2025 academic year for their participation in the program. Additionally, all travel costs for both trips will be covered by the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics.

Student Responsibilities:
Students will be asked to attend bi-weekly meetings in the fall 2024 and spring 2025 semesters to plan and develop programming and coordinate travel logistics.
Students will travel to Washington, DC, during the spring 2025 semester to attend a 2-3 day workshop with representatives from the Chautauqua Institution. (Exact dates TBD).
Students will travel to the Chautauqua Institution for 1 week during the summer 2025 season. (Exact dates TBD).

The Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics is seeking dedicated students who are interested in co-creative design work, who are passionate about the relationship between technology and ethics, and who are interested in traveling to Washington, DC, and Chautauqua, NY. This is an opportunity to gain valuable skills and network within the ASU community and with our community partners.
