Position Overview

The Assistant Vice Provost for Student Affairs at the University of Kansas serves as a senior member on the Student Affairs leadership team and reports to and serves at the pleasure of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs. This position supervises and provides overall leadership and direction for Sexuality and Gender Diversity Center, Emily Taylor Center for Women and Gender Equity, and Office Multicultural Affairs. Additionally, this position coordinates the University Awards program and the newly created Bias Education Response Team (BEST), and Student Affairs strategic approach to elevate diversity, equity, and social justice across all programs and services. This position works collaboratively to promote and support the role of Student Affairs in a complex and changing environment.

The Office of Student Affairs houses the University's student services organizations which provide services and programs designed to assist students in achieving their academic and personal goals. Student Affairs works in partnership with other members of the campus community in the creation, enhancement, coordination, and assessment of services and activities beyond academics and serves as an advocate for students across the University community.

The University is located in Lawrence, a city with a population exceeding 95,000. The community is known for its support of the University, education, arts, and research and regularly appears in various “best town” listings. Lawrence is centrally located between the State of Kansas Capitol in Topeka and the major metropolitan community of Kansas City.


Job Description

25% - Serves on the Student Affairs Senior Leadership team to provide leadership, planning and administrative support for Student Affairs offices.
25% - Supervision and evaluation of personnel, fiscal management, and budget oversight.
20% - Develop initiatives that foster community, belonging, equity, and inclusive excellence. Collaborate with campus partners to create, encourage, and elevate diversity, equity, and social justice. Ensure a framework of equity and social justice is embedded into the day-to-day work in Student Affairs. Oversee, implement, and review the university’s recruitment and retention efforts to increase persistence and graduation for all historically under-represented and under-served undergraduate and graduate student populations.
20% - Address concerns regarding students and serve as a contact for students, faculty, staff, and family members needing assistance and direction related to student support services. Advocate for student needs and concerns and advance student engagement in decision-making to promote persistence and graduation.
10% - Other duties as needed, including supporting Student Senate; serving as a member of the KU On Call Team; and representation of Student Affairs at University events and services on various University committees.


Position Requirements

This position will work on-campus.


Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate, juris doctorate or other terminal degree.
  • Minimum of three years of full time, professional experience demonstrating implementation of innovation practices and/or strategic program development. 
  • Experience working with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, administrators, and other members of the community as demonstrated by experience, application materials, interview, and references.
  • Experience supervising full-time staff.
  • Experience with budget oversight and management.
  • Experience working collaboratively across departments, units or with various constituency groups to grow and champion programs supporting marginalized populations.
  • Experience ensuring continuous improvements, efficiency, and assessment in student services that aid in retention and graduation as demonstrated by experience, developed reporting analytics and confirmed by references.
  • Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Seven years of progressive leadership focused on social justice and designing, implementing, and managing programs that bring about social change and equality for vulnerable and marginalized populations.
  • Experience addressing student needs related to student development and well-being in order to increase retention, academic progress and graduation rates; including assessing program effectiveness on student recruitment, retention and persistence.
  • Experience with budget oversight and management.
  • Evidence of data-driven assessment of the program/service needs of today's college students.
  • Familiar with referral processes and typical campus resources.
  • Experience providing consultation to university faculty, staff and administration regarding student support.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex situations.
  • Experience in policy and procedure development.
  • Willingness to initiate change while managing multiple and concurrent tasks.
  • Experience working at a large, public university.
  • Commitment to professional development and professional associations as evidence by membership and/or presentation.
