About the Office of Student and Academic Affairs (SAA): 
 
The CEHD Office of Student and Academic Affairs (SAA) supports the teaching, scholarship, and service missions of the College by onboarding new students, facilitating enrollment and retention, addressing barriers to success, adjudicating appeals and grievances, awarding scholarships, coordinating enrichment activities and celebratory events such as the student research symposium and graduation, and providing students with a broad range of informational, advising, professional development, financial, and support resources. Further, SAA advises College and University faculty and staff on academic policies and procedures, complex student matters, instructional challenges and pedagogical enhancements, curricular development, course scheduling, and integrity and compliance efforts. About the Position:
 
The Assistant for Student Communications and Events will report to the Assistant Dean for Student Success, and directly assist the Student Communications Coordinator and Student Enrichment Coordinator. The person in this position will work in-person on the Fairfax campus in the CEHD Student Success Center suite on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:30 am – 5:00 pm and occasionally on other weekdays, nights, or weekends for scheduled programs and events. Wage employees are limited to 1450 hours of work during the twelve-month period of May 1 through April 30 and may not exceed an average of 29 hours per week.
Responsibilities:
  • Coordinating small and large-scale in-person event set-up, facilitation, and breakdown; 
  • Assisting with the development and execution of virtual and in-person enrichment programming (on-campus and off-campus);
  • Maintaining the condition and inventory of event materials and equipment;
  • Setting up and tracking event registrations using event management systems such as Eventbrite;
  • Developing and maintaining a robust social media content calendar; 
  • Proofreading print and electronic communications and media;
  • Displaying advertisements for events and initiatives;
  • Photographing events and archiving and tagging event photos;
  • Updating Mailchimp marketing automation platform audience lists often and applying appropriate tags;
  • Transporting data from Airtable to Mailchimp templates for setting up newsletters;
  • Using software and equipment such as a Cricut, button maker, popcorn machine, professional camera, video recording equipment, and teleprompter, for enrichment, celebration, and marketing events, initiatives, and campaigns;
  • Managing front desk operations/first impressions, including greeting visitors and managing a multiline phone;
  • Will have to occasionally lift or push small event equipment or supplies as well as travel to nearby stores to pick up event supplies and materials;
  • Performing other duties, as assigned.

 
Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Event/Hospitality Management, Communications, Public Relations, English, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Demonstrated experience planning and executing high-visibility events and activities;
  • Familiarity with email marketing software (e.g., MailChimp, Constant Contact);
  • Experience using social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram;
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt easily to changes; 
  • Superior skills with Microsoft Office suite as well as strong database experience;
  • Motivated self-starter and problem solver; 
  • Excellent customer service skills;
  • Strong ability to multitask and prioritize;
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

 
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a higher education environment with diverse populations;
  • Demonstrated experience performing office functions such as answering multiline phones, scheduling appointments, and greeting and assisting visitors;
  • Demonstrated experience providing administrative support to professional staff;
  • Experience operating DSLR cameras and video recording equipment;
  • Demonstrated experience using software, technology, and equipment such as Airtable, Eventbrite, Canva, Hootsuite, Cricut, and Cannon copier/printer;
  • Experience in planning and creating social media content.
