What You Will Do

 

Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking applicants for an archaeology graduate student to join its Cultural Resources program, which is part of the Laboratory’s diverse Environmental Protection and Compliance Division. The Cultural Resources Program manages 2,000 archaeological sites spanning 10,000 years of human activity across approximately 40 square miles of the Pajarito Plateau. This unique landscape is characterized by deep canyons and mesas and is directly adjacent to Bandelier National Monument. The archaeology graduate student will join a team of cultural resources specialists who support the Laboratory’s mission by ensuring compliance with federal and state cultural resources laws and regulations. In keeping with the spirit of the National Historic Preservation Act and with Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Graduate Research Assistant Program, this year-round internship will afford the archaeology graduate student opportunities to participate in field work, outreach activities, and compliance-related archaeological research. Tasks will include:

 

1.        Field work, including archaeological survey, monitoring, and site recording

2.        Report preparation, including writing, photographic documentation, data compilation, and geographic information systems (GIS) spatial mapping

3.        Outreach activities that promote cultural resources awareness internal and external to the Laboratory

 

This position is physically located in Los Alamos, NM.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

 

·         Currently enrolled in an anthropology and/or archaeology graduate student program

·         Demonstrated excellence with interpersonal communication skills while working in team settings

·         Demonstrated excellence in writing skills

·         Experience conducting archeological fieldwork, including recording archaeological sites and/or conducting archaeological surveys

·         Advanced experience identifying archaeological materials such as ceramics, lithics, or faunal remains

 

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and currently enrolled in a graduate program in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field (Master’s or PhD program).

 

Desired Qualifications:

·         Experience working in cultural resources management, especially in New Mexico or the American Southwest, including preparing cultural resources reports, historic preservation documentation, and/or other documents written for professional or public use

·         Experience and/or interest in database management and development

·         Knowledge of statistical techniques, scientific methods, and/or data analysis

·         Knowledge or experience working with indigenous peoples, especially in relation to cultural resource management issues

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States.  Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).  Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

 

*Eligibility requirements:  To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
