The Bard DNA summer program has traditionally been held in person, but this year we are shifting strategies to continue helping our students during this pandemic. This summer we will be shifting gears to construct a virtual summer program. In this way, we will be able to maintain our mission of creating an academic bridge for our incoming ninth-graders while also taking the necessary steps to keep our community members safe.

Project Summary
Bard High School Early College (BHSEC) Queens is committed to increasing high school graduation and postsecondary degree completion rates for historically underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged students.  This summer, we are hosting a virtual summer program for 45 of our incoming ninth-grade students. The Bard DNA Summer Program is designed to support students from historically underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged backgrounds in their academic and social transition from NYC middle schools to BHSEC Queens. The program will promote growth in social and emotional connections to BHSEC Queens and develop familiarity with academic skills that will be important to incoming ninth graders in the year ahead.
BHSEC Queens is seeking faculty members to teach in our Bard DNA virtual summer program.  The faculty members will teach a three-week course in this area of expertise and will work closely with the Bard DNA Program Coordinator, Bard DNA student staff, and Bard DNA Director. Faculty members will immerse students in engaging coursework and connect with students to discuss strategies for academic growth and advancement.

Orientation and Training, for all Summer Faculty and Peer Mentors, will be held on Monday,  July 6th and the summer program will run from July 13 – July 31. Monday - Thursday, the program will run from 11 am - 1:30 pm. Hours for the summer program for teachers can range from 3 - 6 hours a week, split over two workdays. We will be hiring faculty members in mathematics/computing and the humanities. Summer Faculty will be compensated with a $1,500 stipend (unless you are leading 2 class sections per workday, in which case compensation will be $2000).

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop an academic curriculum for the three-week program that builds academic skills and reinforces important concepts essential for success in 9th grade.
  • Attend the Faculty and Peer Mentor Orientation and Training that will be held on Monday, July 6th
Preference is given to Candidates with the Following Qualifications:
  • Currently teaching in the Bard High School Early College Network
  • Teachers whose proposed course addresses Identity--Race/ethnicity, gender/sexuality, socioeconomic status, etc.--in their curriculum.
  • Prior experience working with historically underrepresented students in higher education
  • Special Education Teaching experience with specialization in math or literature

If you are not a current BHSEC staff/faculty member please upload a cover letter and resume, including contact information for two references.  In your cover letter, please discuss your interest in this position, experience working with historically underrepresented students; and explain how your expertise, training, and pedagogical approach has prepared you to teach and support students who have been historically underrepresented in higher education. You should also submit a course proposal.
