The School of Humanities offers an Archives PhD Studentship (Humanities) for a project based on material in the University of Southampton’s Archives, to be supervised in the School of Humanities. The studentship of £15,000 per annum covers UK fees and a contribution to maintenance for three academic years.
The project offers the opportunity to build a postgraduate research topic tied to the extensive holdings of the Archives and Special Collections in the Hartley Library at the University of Southampton. These holdings are in the region of 7 million manuscript items together with around 50,000 printed works. Premier amongst its papers relating to military affairs and politics for the nineteenth century are papers of of two nineteenth-century Prime Ministers the Duke of Wellington and Lord Palmerston. Whilst principal among those for the twentieth century are the papers of Earl Mountbatten of Burma and Countess Mountbatten of Burma, a multi-media archive of approximately 250,000 papers and 50,000 photographs, which contains material both of national and international significance. Southampton is also the home of one of the largest collections of Jewish archives in Western Europe, making it an invaluable resource for research in Jewish life and history. Other notable collection areas are its growing maritime archaeology collections and its Basque refugee material. Students using the collections can draw on the expertise and immense knowledge of the curators within Archives and Special Collections in support of their, as well as opportunities to engage with academics and researchers from research institutes within the School of Humanities

The successful candidate is likely to have the following qualifications:
- A relevant undergraduate degree at 2:1 or above/Masters degree with Merit or above.

The studentship, funded by the School of Humanities, is worth £15,000 per year and covers UK fees and a contribution to maintenance for three academic years at UK residency rate only.
