Sustainable Chemicals Innovations Enabling Net Carbon Emissions (SCIENCE) - Fully Funded PhD Studentship

Updated: about 1 year ago
Location: Nottingham, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 30 Apr 2023

Location: UK Other

A PhD studentship working with Dr Anabel Lanterna is available for a 2023 start as part of a major collaboration with Lubrizol.

The project will develop a culture of embedding sustainability in chemicals and polymer manufacturing from the earliest stages of design through to industrial production and use. Focussed on enabling sustainable routes to industrially important molecules, the studentship will be largely based around developing an environmentally sustainable method for isomerisations and hydrogenations using less energy-demanding catalysts (heterogeneous photocatalysts) while removing the need for high pressure hydrogen. The project will harness sunlight for chemical manufacturing to enable (i) reactions under mild conditions (room temperature, atmospheric pressure); (ii) the use of renewable feedstocks and/or reagents, and (iii) minimising the use of fossil energy.

Successful applicants will be registered to study at Nottingham and will be expected to spend time in all collaborating organisations. Students will be working alongside research fellows associated with the projects and side by side with industrially based scientists focussing on sustainability in a diverse research culture with the opportunity to contribute to project design and execution. In addition, it is expected that the students will be engaged in outreach activities to encourage inclusion, diversity and respect in chemistry and the workplace.

The studentship will be available from 1st October 2023 as 4 years PhD with stipend at EPSRC standard rates starting at £17,668 per year with awards increasing every year, typically with inflation. This position is only available for UK citizens.

We welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate that they have the ability to succeed in the programme to which they have applied, and that they will benefit from and contribute to the learning, research and social environment at the University. We value diversity and are committed to equality of opportunity and flexible working patterns. Applications are welcome from candidates who have non-traditional academic backgrounds.
