Applications are invited to apply for a four year Postgraduate Research studentship, supported by the School of Engineering and Applied Science, to be undertaken within the Computer Science subject group at Aston University. The successful applicant will join the ALICE, HCI or Software Engineering research groups.
This studentship is combined with a teaching assistant role. The successful candidate will be required to provide up to an average of 6 hours per week of teaching support for a distance learning programme; therefore the student must be capable of teaching on an undergraduate course in Software Engineering. The position is available to start in September 2019 (or later by agreement)
This studentship includes a fee bursary to cover the Home/EU tuition fee rate plus a maintenance allowance.*
Applicants from outside the EU may apply for this studentship but will need to pay the difference between the ‘Home/EU’ and the ‘Overseas’ tuition fees*.

Prospective Research Areas
The Aston Lab for Intelligent Collectives Engineering is Aston University's research group for intelligent systems. Our research expertise includes various forms of intelligent, social and collective computing systems: multi-agent systems, evolutionary computation, swarm intelligence, artificial social agents, machine learning, self-adaptive, self-organising and self-aware systems. We have a particular focus on how to engineer such system based on biological and social principles, and capable of achieving specific desirable properties, such as robustness, adaptability, scalability and creativity. ALICE’s work is being applied to a wide range of domains including sensor networks, swarm robotics, computer-generated art, decision support systems, economic modelling, healthcare, smart manufacturing, and intelligent virtual agents.
The main aim of the Software Engineering at Aston (SEA) research group is to enable organisations to create and maintain better software, better. We develop concepts, theories and tools to construct systems that solve our problems reliably in the face of ever increasing complexity and uncertainty. Our main approach is to increase the level of abstraction at which software systems operate, bringing them closer to the problems to be solved. Our research has been applied to web engineering, service-oriented architectures, digital health systems and high-integrity systems engineering, among other areas.
The Aston Interactive Media (AIM) Lab and associated AIM Team is Aston’s lab and research group for human-computer interaction (HCI) research. The AIM Lab is a state-of-the-art lab dedicated to research into, and development and evaluation of, innovative interactive media and applications. The lab’s novel design and infrastructure establish it as a rare facility, capable of supporting innovative research- and industry-led design of interaction-based technologies and applications. Its unique combination of facilities make it ideally equipped to support innovation in the field of mobile interactive technologies and the application of effective, novel approaches to the evaluation of such technologies. Our research expertise and interests include novel lab-based evaluation techniques, novel mobile interaction techniques, multimodal interaction, mobile assistive technology design and evaluation, participatory design approaches for special needs users, trust in e-Commerce, and audio feedback design (including in motor sport).
The successful applicant will have a strong undergraduate (first class or upper second class) and/or Master’s degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or a related discipline as well as (for non HCI-centric candidates) excellent programming and analytical/mathematical skills”
