Presidential Academic Fellowship in the Economics of Poverty Reduction

Updated: 4 days ago
Location: Manchester, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 15 Sep 2019

The Global Development Institute (GDI) is a University of Manchester research beacon. GDI is seeking exceptional ECA candidates conducting research on public economics, labour economics or welfare economics applied to low and middle income countries. We have a particular interest in enhancing our research in the economic analysis of distribution and redistribution of income and wellbeing in low and middle income countries. This is one of GDI’s core areas of longstanding research expertise, especially research on anti-poverty transfer policies and programming in the context of improving social policies and institutions to secure pro-poor growth.

The ECA research contribution, and later teaching, will develop an innovative research programme on a well-defined area within the economic analysis of distribution and redistribution of income and wellbeing in low and middle income countries. For example, researchers interested in the analysis of anti-poverty transfers might consider covering research on the design of such programmes: evaluation of behavioural and economic effects on participating households, and potentially on wider societal effects; the study of the implications of anti-poverty transfers for tax-transfer schemes; and research on the political sustainability and legitimacy of anti-poverty transfers.

Applications from researchers from across the social sciences applied to low and middle income countries are welcomed, particularly from economists with an interest in public economics, labour economics, or welfare economics, and from political scientists with an interest in welfare institutions.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments will be made on merit.
