Postgraduate Teaching Assistant (PTA) Scholarship in Criminology (within the Department of Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology)

The PTA scholarship enables you to undertake a PhD programme in Sociology. You will also be employed as a Postgraduate Teaching Assistant in Criminology, within the department of Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology, which will ensure that you graduate as a highly skilled researcher and educator.

The College of Social Sciences and International Studies (SSIS) has scholarship funding of over £600,000, available to support PhD applicants starting their postgraduate research degree in September 2022. This scholarship is available for full time entrants only.

This award provides direct payment of full tuition fees, direct remuneration for teaching and a maintenance stipend for up to 3 years of study, for a PhD in your chosen discipline.

The studentship will involve 180 hours of teaching (including preparation and marking/assessment and training) per year (remuneration rate specified below).

Over the course of the programme, students will have the chance to work closely with leading academics from the College of Social Sciences and International Studies, who produce world-leading research. This scholarship is available within Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology.

Students will be supervised by experts in their chosen field and will receive mentoring and support throughout the programme.

Concurrently, the PTA teaching contract allows students to gain teaching experience and achieve teaching excellence by providing professional support and teaching-related mentoring.  Successful applicants will be expected to undertake teaching in modules within Criminology. Funding Outline:

The studentship is for a maximum of 3 years and provides:

Annual total (i.e., remuneration + stipend, excluding tuition fees): £15,609

Full tuition fees at UK/International fee rate

Remuneration for 180 hours teaching per year at Occasional Teacher A level : £3,098 (2021/22 rate subject to tax & National Insurance)

Annual stipend: £12,511 (2021/22 rate)

The continued studentship is dependent on successful progression within the PhD programme each year.

Entry Requirements

Successful applicants should normally have a good first degree (at least 2.1, or international equivalent) in a relevant field of study, and have obtained, or are currently working towards a Master's degree at Merit level, or international equivalent, in a relevant field of Social Sciences.
